Mexico City is located on a plate with an unstable foundation of dirt and sand. This natural disaster was caused when the denser Cocos tectonic plate subducted under the North American Plate. The subducting caused shaking and a huge earthquake occured. Some of the effects of this earthquake were that the homes of about 250,000 people were destroyed. There were landslides, rockslides, and sandblows. The entire Mexico City was affected as well as the area around it.

The Earth systems which were affected were the geosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. The geosphere was affected because the tectonic plates were shifting and they subducted. This changed the landscape and lots of buildings in the city were destroyed. The biosphere was affected because lots of humans died and some animals as well. This affected the hydrosphere because the plates which subducted were underwater, and this created an underwater trench.
