Week 2 : How did you feel in a particular week?

In the week 2, I was very excited and I felt good. I learned a lot of new things during this week 2 class. All classes were conducted in English, so I had no idea that I was very nervous during the first week, but I was excited because it was my first time learning English related to my major. I took the time to look at words about administration and welfare, and how to solve these issues in my future job and how they would affect other countries.

We looked at welfare related to the major. There were many areas of welfare. Abortion, Affirmative action, Ageism, assault, HIV, Identity theft etc. I interested in Multiple cultural family, senior citizens, children, teen pregnancy and low income earners. In Global issues from list in our education website, disarmament and birth control are new things to me.

In my future job as a social welfare official, I will meet socially disadvantage people directly and provide welfare support. Or as administrative officials, I will supplement relevant policy or make new ones.

Global issues in other countries affect Korea as well. For example, there is a case of ME TOO. The Me Too movement, which accuses the US of sexual harassment or sexual assault triggered in Hollywood, has crossed the Pacific Ocean and affected Korea. This led to a change in Korea's wrong culture and practices.

After learned welfare issues, we learned about administration issues. I interested in minimum pay, low birthrate, gender problem, aging population and environment.

As a public official, I will make equal policy on everyone in the future.

It was the first time I came to college to learn what the major issues are and how to think about future jobs. That's why I was so excited and I was glad that it was time to get the information I wanted to know.

Week 10 : Are you comfortable with other class members?

With the progress of the zoom class due to COVID19, there wasn't much opportunity to get close to class members. If we had face-to-face classes, we would naturally have the opportunity to get acquainted while sitting next to some students, which was the most unfortunate part of our online class. However, we had an opportunity to get acquainted with the group members in a group meeting for about 2 weeks with 5 members for the group presentation in class. And on Week 10, it was the announcement day of our group, Group 5. Even though it was the first order of presentations made online, we ended up presenting seamlessly through screen sharing.

Of course, I had a group discussion with other people in other states, so it was definitely comfortable compared to the first time I felt, and I was able to know most of the faces and names of the people in our class. However, the group members of Group 5 seemed to feel more ties than other class members because they had a process of joining forces with each other to achieve a common goal of group presentation, and making everyone satisfied. Our group was also considerate of each other in making ppt and asked for opinions. And when looking for an article, comprehension, vocabulary, and discussion quiz, the group members actively participant our group conference such as trying to help each other with difficulties.

I think this relaxed atmosphere could come from Maria's discussions with random group members. Because, in a group discussion, if we debate between the people we want to do with each other, we will have discussions with the same people every day, and we won't even know who took the class. It seems that class members could be made more comfortable by having several discussions with different group members and one group presentation.

Week 14 : Do you have hope for the future?

In week 14, Group 4 presentation is final presentation.

When I first took this class, at the end, I wished my English skills improved. When I compared the discussions between the first week and the last week, the English proficiency of me and class members was improved, and discussions were conducted with more diverse contents. For example, in the self-introduction part of week1, anyone didn't talk untill a professor came in our room. And in the week4, when the news article was first discussed, I was busy writing my opinions briefly and writing each other's opinions. However, after going through the group discussion on the news article 6 times, in last 7 times, the group discussion in week 14, my opinion was composed of opinions, grounds, examples, and conclusions. I also confidently asked questions about the opinions of the group members. For example, one of the discussion issues in Group 4 was to create a policy to prevent the dangers of electric scooters, and the group members said they should wear a helmet. I questioned this opinion and asked how to control it.

I hope that I continue to improve my English fluency as much as this semester. There seems to be no perfect end in studying other languages. The more I learn, the newer it is. This class was conducted based on English, and required an appropriate level of English conversation and English writing skills. However, sometimes there were some words that I could not understand while in class, and I used a translator because my English was difficult to write. In the future, I hope to have fluent English skills without using a translator. To do that, I will study English while studying TOEIC through summer vacation. And if I have the opportunity later, I would like to apply for another class from Professor Maria. This class gave me the opportunity to get a major in English, and it made me good at group discussions. In addition, I was attracted to foreign professors' classes, which cannot be learned from Korean professors centered on theory.
