Jean Piaget's perspective of development was that intelligence is not a "fixed" trait, but rather is accumulated through experiences. He believed that a child's cognitive development advanced through maturation and their environment. Piaget explained that children organized their way of thinking through "schema"-building blocks of cognitive ability. Piaget believed that both nature and nurture were necessary in a child's development as they went hand-in-hand. He also considered the child as an active participant in their own learning, as their exploration and experiences would help shape them.

Lev Vygotsky believed that social engagement was absolutely crucial for a child's cognitive development. He emphasized the effects of culture (attention, sensation, perception, memory), the influence of adults, and the importance of language. In regards to the question of nature vs nurture, Vygotsky believed that both are crucial to a child's development, but emphasized nurture because he believed children rely on social interactions and their environment in order to develop cognitively. He also considered children as active in their learning, as he believed that they do not depend on stages of development, but rather on social learning and guidance.

Both Piaget and Vygotsky believed that children are active participants of their learning process. Piaget considered that children have to gain experience and maturation through their own experiences and biological growth. Vygotsky believed that children have to be involved socially and gain social learning through interactions with their peers and instructors. These theorists also believed that instructors play an important part in child development, as Piaget considered them facilitators for learning and Vygotski emphasized their importance as guides. While these theorists had differing thoughts in key areas of their ideals, they both recognized the importance of active children and instructors.
