Practicing smaller arm movements.

As the coach, in week one and revise again in week four I would practice smaller arm movements. As we see in the video attached, the breaststroke arms are much too wide creating drag. This could be done by practicing with the student while standing in the pool and forgetting about legs. All arm movements should be simultaneous and in the same horizontal plane. Hands should be pushed forward together. Hands should not be brought back beyond the hip line.

Perfect streamline position needs to be maintained. This is necessary to prevent drag. In week two, we need to stay in line! This will be revised in week four. Back of head, bottom and heels must all be in a line. Smaller arm movements from week one also reduces drag. The kick must be kept tight. Keep a tight core. The activity is called "push and glide" where the student pushes off the wall and glides out as the coach corrects their form.

In week three and again in week seven, as the coach, Aidan needs to practice bringing legs towards the body for the kick. Some teaching points are "heels to bottom" and not "knees to chest". Bring heels back together after the kick and to practice keeping the feet pointing outwards. Squeeze legs together. To do this, we can practice with the student on the edge of the pool to get used to the leg/foot movement.

By the end of week two, Aidan felt as if he was using less energy and could swim for longer after practicing being streamline in the water. This proved that the "push and glide" activity worked for the Aidan. It is difficult to know whether the student is carrying out the points you are giving them. Teaching points like "tight core" is impossible for the coach to see. It is important to make sure that Aidan had improved by the end of the class.

While arms were relaxed, legs were kicking and while legs were relaxed, arms were moving. This shows that the goal for this lesson along with the other three lessons was achieved.

While I was swimming I would often think back to the activities carried out like "sculling" and this would remind me to keep arm movements neater and not go as wide which can be seen in my initial performance video. We practiced this again in week three which was a nice reminder of how important it is.
