"Flores, Flores para los muertos". SO, yes, i took online spanish II so i can tel you what this means without using a translator. It means, "flowers, flowers for the dead". this iconic quote was said by "mexican woman" when blanche was revealing her past to mitch. The mexican woman is a street vendor that in present in the background f the scene while blanche is talking to mitch. This use of having something so symbolic occouring in the background is something that is very typical of williams. The death of Blanches boyfriend had an enormous impact on her psyche. “Death […], death was as close as you are. […] The opposite is desire”. The desire that her boyfriend for the man he had sex with is what caused him to die. THe desire that Blanch experienced following her boyfriends death is what led to the death of belle reve. THere are many other times in the story when flowers are referenced. Oftentimes stella will describe Blanche as a daisy. Daisies in particular are oftentimes used as a way to describe innosence which is very ironic considering blanches motives for moving in with stella and stanley.
