The 15th Amendment was ratified in 1870 to prevent Southern States from not letting African Americans vote in elections. The 15th Amendment stated that citizens could not be stopped from voting "on account of race, color, or pervious condition of servitude." The 15th Amendment did not apply to women which caused white women angry. These white women questioned " why couldn't they vote when black men-former slaves-could." Before the Amendment, African American men couldn't vote in 16 states, so the 15th Amendment wasn't aimed only towards the south.
