Having a personal budget is very important. People can create a budget that also works as an emergency fund, "Set aside 10% each month of your income until you have 3 months' worth of expenses set aside" (Textbook pg 2). This is to ensure that if you're out of work or need money to fix your car you have the money.

Wanting to buy a home can serve as all three types of goals, long term, intermediate, and short. "For example, how much to save each month toward a down payment for a home to be bought in five or more years" (Textbook pg 3). Having goals set in place will help young adults have the money needed when they grow up to pay for college or a house.

I have always been taught and told to save 10% whenever I got money. This has been going on since I first found any money. It's been hard when I was younger to follow this method, because I didn't want to 'lose' any money but instead spend all of it on Legos. But my dad always said I would appreciate it when I was looking at cars to buy. Sure enough he was right and when the time came I could buy a car and still have money left over.
