"the flames gather and flash about them, and would fain lay hold on them, and swallow them up"

This shows personification because it says that the flames would swallow the sinners as if the flames had a mouth. The reason the author added this is to strike fear into sinners that if you sin then bad things will happen and you could never be saved.

"Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell."

This figurative language represents a simile because it shows a comparison using "as". The author added this to explain that the more wicked you are the more it adds to the weight that drags you further down to hell.

The figurative language used here would be personification because it tries to say that a fire is trying to break out of someone heart. The author added this to show that when you sin you can not be saved if you continue and fire in your heart begins to start and soon will take over when it breaks out.

This quote shows personification because it say the water is rising and getting more mighty witch means kinda more strong and angry. The author added this to show that god builds up his wrath of water and it gets higher and stronger as you continue to sin.
