Too many girls still experience gender discrimination in the workplace, child marriage and pregnancy, sexual assault, and unpaid domestic work, especially those from the poorest families.

Everywhere in the world, across all echelons of society and economic class, gender-based violence occurs. While both boys and girls suffer unfavorable effects, girls are more vulnerable. Moreover, around the world, 152 million children are currently working. Children who work find it difficult or impossible to attend school, which puts them at danger of going behind their peers. Child labor affects boys and girls unevenly, and parents' choices are frequently impacted by broader social conventions about the many roles that they should perform in the family and in society.

Gender roles are assumptions about the attitudes, qualities, and behaviors that apply to men and women based on their gender. A set of beliefs about a certain gender's place in society are alluded to as gender stereotypes. Gender roles reinforce inequality and have a significant negative impact on minorities who might not be able to challenge these prejudices.
