In these two chapters, Doctor Thorne learns that his niece's other uncle, Roger Scatcherd, has made him the executor of his estate. Inside of his will he has stipulated that if something should happen to his son, his only heir, then the bulk of his estate, which includes $200K, will go to his sister's first born child, which just so happens to be Doctor Thorne's niece Mary. Doctor Thorne spends the bulk of the remaining chapters going back and forth debating on whether he should tell Roger about this development.

The way Trollope continues to add dimension to the story through multiple plot lines always impresses me, but this one in particular I was surprised by. I knew that Mary would need to inherit in some way so that she could be with her obvious future man, Frank Gresham the younger, but I truly did not know how it was going to happen. I am curious to know if Roger Scatcherd, her unknown uncle, will come to be known to her or if he will die before she or Doctor Thorne can make him aware of the situation.

In this chapter, we are introduced to America's Greatest Runner, Steve Prefontaine, better known as Pre. We learn about the town of Coos Bay and its athletes being very big in the town, the most notable being Pre. The rest is about how Pre came to be a spectacular runner and his high school coach, Walt McClure, talks about his success and training in high school under his supervision, his choice for college and competing at the AAU Championships representing the US. We do get a mention of Pre reflecting on his races and training and a very special letter he wrote to his hometown newspaper telling his town loves him and how he is doing.

My reaction to this chapter is one of awe since I am a runner and I am reading about how the greatest American runner came to be. He was just like me in the sense of being a high school boy running both cross country and track & field, but different because of his will to win. I have the will to win but not one the level that Pre had, reading this first chapter has made me think, about what can I do to have that drive, that will to perform well as he did. Maybe not exactly like him but something to improve my progress and have the fight to win at any moment.

This chapter introduces Pre in his college days, mostly focusing on his freshman year in the beginning. It talks about how he ran for the AAU while also running for Oregon. It also talks about how Pre took on some competitors he had from the other schools and how he beat them. The runners he took on were some of the best in the country which he was trying to be.

My reaction to this chapter was one that amazed me. I already read of how good he was in high school and that he was going to run for one of the best running colleges in the country. Now taking on competition at the collegiate and going on AAU tours is amazing. I can't believe he handled both and did well in both. Typically when you try to handle multiple things, you don't give it your all, but he did.

This chapter introduces Pre in his junior year at the University of Oregon and how he has matured from his younger energetic self to someone who could contend for a medal at the upcoming Olympic Games. As previously mentioned in my Impact Statement, Pre wanted to be competitive or fast and he treated simply everyday tasks like that. For example, after a workout, a runner could go in the shower at the same time as Pre and by the time he got out of the shower, Pre would be ready to conquer the day. It talks about his personal life outside of running. It talks about a race he should have lost but he did not and how he was still the best and after his junior track season was over, how he could focus entirely on the Olympics.

I know that people that are great at something can always have one or two bad moments but Pre completely gets rid of that idea. When I read about the race he should have lost, I pictured it in my mind and how it came down to the wire and how he completely destroyed it. It's amazing that a human being good do the things he did.
