Signed to: SYCO
Owned by: Simon Cowell
Other SYCO artists: Most, or at least the most famous, are artists that are particularly popular among highly passionate demographics. "Little Mix", "Fifth Harmony", and "Olly Murs" being some examples.
Target audience: Girls, typically pre-teen to teenaged. According to YouGov's profiler, they like reality TV programming and are heavy users of social media.
Merchandise available: What feels like everything. Hats, t-shirts, socks, bags, posters, bed covers, teddy bears, shoes, lipstick, mugs, skirts, wristbands, guitars, scooters... the list goes on for a long time.
How to buy the music: According to the official site, it's available on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.
Backstory: One Direction were formed on the X-Factor, when the judges put them together as a boyband. They went on to finish third, and signed on to Syco shortly thereafter.

Signed to: Bella Union
Owned by: Robin Guthrie & Simon Raymonde
Other Bella Union artists: The only one I've heard of is Father John Misty. Here are some with interesting names: Alessi's Ark, Explosions in the Sky, and Snowbird.
Target audience: A relatively small audience, Lanterns on the Lake will likely target left-leaning 20-30 somethings living in art-centric but affluent areas.
Merchandise available: Lanterns on the Lake have very little merch available, with t-shirts and art being the main focus (as well as a tote bag).
How to buy the music: Though available on iTunes and Amazon, they push for physical copies - namely vinyl, which is particularly trendy nowadays.
Backstory: They formed in 2007, and since then have released 3 albums. They're from Newcastle.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Mainstream
Advantages include £££££! Funding for major music videos, money for album production, money for marketing, money for spending. Other advantages are notoriety, fame, and other ways of staying "stardom".
Disadvantages include: The other side of stardom! Walking outside without bodyguards or large groups of individuals screaming at you in delight. Also, your privacy is essentially dead and your creativity is much more limited so as to make the music as commercially viable as possible.
Indie
Advantages include: Creative freedom! Privacy intact! Unlikely to leach insufferable levels of stardom!
Disadvantages include: Lack of money earned! Unlikely to enter the charts! Unlikely to be able to coast off of the money of one album! Etc.!

How important is all the merch?

Depends on what you see as important. If you're SYCO, it's super freakin' important. Brand image needs to spread like a plague, so shoving your band on every possible thing means that there isn't a soul alive who won't know who they are or be aware of them at all times.
However, if your Bella Union... not so much. It might be a nice side-income, but really, indie labels are more likely to be "about the music", which isn't to say "better" but is to say less interested in creating something hyper-marketable. So, in that instance, what matters most is just the music.

How many different ways can fans find out about the bands?

If you're a fan of One Direction, just being on social media for long enough one day means you might find something out. Most entertainment sites will regularly cover them, and they themselves have a huge online presence. Their videos always garner lots of attention, and if we're looking outside of the digital realm, you might just seem them on the sides of busses, the walls of subway stations, and in cinemas with their tour movie.
If you're a fan of Lanterns on the Lake, you'll likely have to be more active to hear about them. Follow social media accounts that put focus on indie artists, or just keep up-to-date with Bella Union or the band themselves through social media or their website. Without this, you'll likely never hear about them.

Would I sign mainstream or indie?

Indie, probably. I like the music more, generally speaking, and I also enjoy walking outside with my earphones with minimal disturbance. Speaking of the work itself, it would be more creatively liberated, which is the only reason I think making music is worth a damn - if it's true to the artist who made it. That isn't impossible under a mainstream label, but it's much harder.
