Character Captain- Ireland Pollock

Richard: Intimidating- Richard is intimidating because he is the "leader" of the guardians and you need to impress him so you do not become a target. On page 62 it says, "Richard jumped off the wall. He came up close and bent down so that their faces were at the same level. His eyes were wide, unblinking and unmoving. They gave Elliot the impression that Richard was sizing him up, and evaluating him."

Elliot: Scared- He might be scared because he has to follow up with what the guardians say and he wants to impress them. He is also sacred because the guardians are intimidating. On page 63 it says. "Perhaps Richard was something worse than a demon. A ripple of cold traveled down Elliot's back. He forced himself to hold the older boy's gaze." That shows that is intimidated by him and he is scared.

The gym teacher: Unkind- He is unkind because he was rude\ to Baker and did not care if he hurt his feelings or not. On page 54 and 55 it says, "The gym teacher went straight up to the raw-nosed kid. Elliot felt the tension evaporate. 'What do you think you're playing?' The teacher loomed over the boy, who instinctively backed away. 'I said, what the h*** do you think you're playing? Haven't you had a ball thrown at you before?' Looking at the ground the boy said something, too quiet Elliot to hear." Continued (I will read the rest out loud)

Literary Luminary- Haley Bahlmann

Pg. 55-56, "'You'd like that, wouldn't you, Baker?' He turned to the waiting players, who by now were making no attempt to conceal their enjoyment . Elliot had a suspicion that this wasn't the first time the raw-nosed boy had been singled out like this. The gym teacher smiled wolfishly. 'This tender little guy is too delicate to play on the football field, so I'm left with deciding what exercise he should be doing instead. Has anyone got any bright ideas?' A boy next to Elliot called out, 'Put him with the girls, sir. Make him play volleyball with the girls.' Mr. Phillips's smile widened. 'An excellent suggestion, Harris, thank you."' I chose to read this because it shows that it isn't just the guardians that are bullying, even the teachers are taunting and punishing the weaker students.

Pg. 66, "'You stand out from the crowd, Elliot. But not because you can't help it--that would be nothing special. When you want to be, you are part of the crowd, others accept you. A valuable skill, to be able to do that. But when you don't want to be part of it, you choose not to be. You are able not to be. And people accept that too, even if they don't notice it, as we do."' I chose this part of the story because it shows that Elliot fits in and hasn't been noticed in the wrong way and that other people at the school are accepting him.
