Poseidon was the brother of Zeus, the sky god and chief deity of ancient Greece, and of Hades, god of the underworld. Poseidon was god of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses and is one of the most bad-tempered, moody and greedy Olympian gods. He was very infamous especially for his bad temper. He was also known to be vengeful when insulted. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea and was swallowed by his father along with Hades, Demeter, Hestia and Hera. When the three brothers deposed their father, the kingdom of the sea fell by lot to Poseidon. His weapon and main symbol was the trident, it could've been once a fish spear. One way we know he is Zeus's brother is when Zeus said, "Now, Brother, you know better than to say such things about me, I should think! I know that tact does not come easily to you, though, I'd be careful what you yo our good nephew there." (Britannica).

Poseidon's Functions in the Odyssey - Tanya Vu

From my research I learned that Poseidon's functions in the Odyssey were being the antagonist. Poseidon punished Odysseus by sending him and his men multiple storms, showing his irritable personality, forcing them to land on several islands that bring them harm. Poseidon's role in The Odyssey is a divine antagonist hampering the main character's journey home. He despises Odysseus for blinding his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus, and constantly hampers his journey home. "By god, I’d rather slave on earth for another man-- some dirt-poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive—
than rule down here over all the breathless dead." (Prezi). He seems short-tempered in the Odyssey. To add on, the Odyssey also shows the gods as less grand. "They function more as spiritual guides and supporters for their human subjects, sometimes assuming mortal disguises in order to do so." (Prezi)

The Themes and Ideas of Poseidon - Tanya Vu

Poseidon shows the theme of anger. The city of Athens without water created the water shortages around the world from then on. "God Poseidon, however, was not pleased with the decision of Cecrops and cursed the city of Athens to never have enough water from then on." (Prezi). He also showed a lesson of, if you don't try your hardest, you won't succeed. During the Olympics he didn't do what he was fully capable of and his brother Zeus came first.
