After reading the article, I can definitely say that learning about other cultures (cultural proficiency) can help combat the unconscious bias. Too often we judge particular students for their actions but do not realize there so much more of our students we do not know, including what makes them behave the way they do. I loved very much the idea of having articles to read and discuss in team/staff meetings.

Specifically, I like the idea of developing a system to reduce biased decisions and to hold ourselves accountable. Working collaboratively with a thinking partner or team helps us to reflect before taking action. When we are making a conscious decision to justify our thinking with others, it will provide us with opportunities to consider other perspectives.

Connection-
Our staff is very diverse. By using our background knowledge, professional development (geared towards cultural proficiency, diversity and poverty) and our own innate empathy; we are able to reach students on a broader level.

Accountability-
Increase Trust! I think having a partner (or small group) who can provide honest feedback on your feelings--taking the emotions out and truly building character values--would provide a safe and nurturing environment for staff=in turn creating a more positive environment for students to learn.

While reading, I couldn't help but think how grateful I am to work on our campus. With how diverse our population is, we have had an amplitude of trainings and convocations. We have been given the opportunity to attend professional developments for GT, ESL, Ruby Payne Poverty book study, and Cultural Proficiency to help us relate to our students. We are fortunate to be able to apply them everyday in our teaching experiences.

We have to find someone we can not only trust, but someone who can give POSITIVE and helpful feedback. A partner or team can help build our self awareness and hold us accountable. Once a year self evaluations or turn in self reflections once a semester.

I can connect to this article because I can proudly say that my family is very diverse. Growing up we were taught acceptance and empathy. It is so important to educate ourselves and others about diverse cultures in order to understand them. We can hold ourselves accountable by making a "conscious" effort to think before we act or speak; basically by modeling. Like Michael Jackson said, "I'm starting with the man in the mirror..

I agree that is very important to build empathy and replace negative associations with positive ones.
Having "get to know activities" with the students can help to have positive relationships and meaningful connections; being able to understand similarities and differences and to give them a sense of belonging and security in a safe environment.Research shows that students' grades increase, and as a result the achievement gaps are narrowed.
