During the 1920's the 18th amendment banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol, but some refused to give it up. People would illegally make and sell alcohol in secret for big profit, those people were called Bootleggers. They got their name from hiding little flasks of alcohol in their boots. They were a big part of the 1920's and helped lead to the repeal of the 18th amendment.

For a while only men could vote, usually only wealthy white men in fact. But women grew tired of not having a say in things and they protested their right to vote. This went on for a while until June 4th, 1919, when congress finally passed the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote just like any other American.

Talking movies started to become a huge thing and if it wasn't those then, (people who could afford them) bought radios to enjoy radio programming in their homes. Radios became a huge part of the growth of the advertising industry. The 1920's also brought on spectator sports, one of the biggest parts of entertainment the era had to offer. Sports like baseball and boxing in major cities became a huge source of entertainment for all.

During this era, flappers were young women who were known for their crazy and energetic freedom as well as embracing a lifestyle viewed by many at the time as outrageous, immoral, and dangerous. They are considered the first generation of independent American women. "Flappers" pushed women's set boundaries to economic, political and sexual freedom for women. They showed change and empowerment during the 1920's.

World War 1, also known as the Great War, ended in 1918, however it was so massive and destructive that it still effects our society to this day. During the 1920's movements like pacifism, isolationism, and spiritualism grew following the end of the war as people wanted to retreat from the horror. The 1920's was an era with many great accomplishments and trends, but it was also a time of great stress and depression.

This political cartoon shows how the 1920's was full of new inventions, such as the Model T car the man is driving in, however the dangerous and icy road and the sign above show how the 1920's was full of reckless spending that would lead to dangerous decisions/changes. It was an era full of success, but there is a point where too much success or money got to peoples heads and that is what became dangerous.
