4. ASSESSEMENT vs EVALUATION

Even both words mean the same in Portuguese - avaliação - they have different concepts in English. This is the lead reason for being subject of search.

Assessment is “the process of collecting information about the characteristics of persons or objects by measuring them” (Hosp & Ardoin, 2008, p.69) and can help teachers improve their classroom practices from year to year, for diagnostic, with a formative purpose. For the same authors evaluation is “the process of using information collected through assessment to take decisions or reach conclusions, such as those for planning” as an act of passing judgement on the basis of setting standards, with a summative purpose.

After reviewing about assessment and evaluation, I will be clear that those are different concepts.

While the assessment is process targeted, evaluation is product targeted. While assessment is concerned in correcting un-evens in one’s performance, evaluation involves making judgments.

Assessment is target to identify the level of performance of an individual, whereas evaluation is performed to determine the degree to which goals are attained.

Although, they are a crucial role in analyzing and refining the performance of a person, project or others educational processes.
