The relationships between Gatsby and Daisy, Daisy and Tom, and Nick and Jordan suffer from a fear of intimacy and a fear of the emotional pain that occurs when humans fall in love. However, this emotional pain causes humans to grow close to one another.

"Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies!"(4.4.288) this shows that fear can be a harmful emotion because it can lead to a lot of things, but unfortunately it usually leads to something bad. John Proctor says this when he rips up his confession letter, meaning he will be hung.

"He is speaking reasonably, restraining all his fears, his anger, his anxiety. You saw her scream, she howled, she swore familiar spirits choked her; she even testified that Satan, in the form of women now in jail, tried to win her soul away, and then when she refused --" (2.2.231)

Although there is evidence to support that fear can be a harmful emotion, fear is an emotion that pushes one further than their limits. For example, in The Crucible Abigail Williams and John Proctor push their limits by having presuming an affair. Abigail attempts flatter Proctor, pushing beyond her limits while still in fear of the town finding out about the affair.

- Gatsby's fear of intimacy is his apparent love for a married women.
- Daisy is still married to Tom so this distance between Gatsby and Daisy creates an emotional connection.
- Gatsby explains his fear of intimacy through repressing his past and achieving financial and social success.
- This emotional connection between Daisy and Gatsby creates fear
- "If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay," said Gatsby. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock." Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.”(Fitzgerald 92)
or
- "She never loved you, do you hear? She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!" (Fitzgerald 130)
This quote shows the fear that Gatsby has in losing Daisy, it also shows that in Daisy's heart she loved him and the fear and frustration of waiting for Gatsby only pushed them together.
