- Roosevelt was first denied his offer of $10 million  and an annual payment  of $25 K for a six-mile-wide zone across Panama and Columbia. He did advocate peaceful relations with other nations, but also wanted a strong international presence

- The Panamanians looked forward to their independence and they started a revolution against Colombia on November 1903
- Colombian troops were easily defeated by the U.S. forces and Panama gained independence from Columbia with the help of the U.S. 
- Then, the U.S. built the canal with Panama's consent. The U.S. knew that if they supported and pretended to care about Panama's revolution for Independence, they would allow the construction of the canal. So even though it seemed as though Panama gained freedom because the U.S. helped them , they were later forced to negotiate land for the canal. Roosevelt wanted this canal to show the power of the U.S.( His Big Stick Policy).
