The U.S. was mainly motivated by Realism to take control of Panama for the construction of the Panama Canal. The U.S. knew that if they supported and pretended to care about Panama's revolution for Independence, they would allow the construction of the canal. So even though it seemed as though Panama gained freedom because the U.S. helped them , they were later forced to negotiate land for the canal. Roosevelt wanted this canal to show the power of the U.S.( His Big Stick Policy). The Canal in the end was only used for U.S. trade and Warships.
