This is my 39th year of teaching. I've taught every class level from kinder to year 10 and been a vice principal. Some advice - smile. Kids hate sour faced teachers.  Listen to children. Don't yell. Have a sense of humour. Love your subject. I am mad about Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, the Bronte sisters,  Stevie Wonder, Henry Lawson, Banjo Patterson,  CJ Dennis,  Nat king Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Borodin and many others which means I become passionate about what I convey to my students. If you you are boring then don't become a teacher or join a speech or acting group that can help you learn some skills.  It doesn't happen over night. The best advice I was given was to read Dale Carnegie's book,  'How To Win Friends and Influence People'.  At first I thought it was a pompous title but it really changed my life and ability to teach.  He tells people, not just teachers,  to tell stories. It works. I joined Toast Masters and that helped me tremendously too,  especially as I was so shy.  At school I was afraid to say two words. Today I am acknowledged as an excellent story teller and teacher.  So smile,  read HTWFAIP and be a good, decent human. Remember there's only one race and that's the human race.
