Many people in the early 1900s like Plato, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Abigail Adams were shamed for their opinions about gender equality, and would endure all types of harassment for speaking out on it. After the Seneca Falls convention, women's rights were becoming more of a conversation topic, and feminism had become more normal and more wanted by people. The women's act movement was a long one, and it is still going on today. It started in Ancient Greece,  and become notable when Plato argued that women should be allowed to govern and defend and women are equal to men. It originated in the 1970's, when an activist named Phyllis Schlafly started preaching that the Equal Rights Act would force all women to work and make it impossible for them to start families. As Schlafly's movement grew traction, Republican politicians, such as then Presidential Candidate Ronald Reagan, recognized that by opposing the ERA, they would gain votes among Southern white women.
