It allows students to explore ideas together, improve their communication skills, and see what areas they need to improve on related to working with others. Collaboration also increases student engagement and enjoyment in learning.
In an Excel class, I grouped students and assigned each group a function in Excel that they needed to all understand, then create an example to teach the class that was recorded using screencastify. Their tutorials were added to a presentation for the class. Excel can be boring for students. This gave students a challenge to learn the function well enough to teach others and create an example. Adding a new software element also made it more interesting for students.
After watching the video in this course, I will use the goals and roles chart in future collaborative assignments.

One of my courses involves a student driven morning news program. Students in this class must collaborate in a variety of ways to produce the program; teams working together to gather, present, and film news and sports stories, other teams working together to edit segments into a cohesive show. Additionally, there are a number of products that must be made (animations, backgrounds, equipment set-up and dismantling). the better the students are at collaborating, the better the product. And it shows.

The fact that when you are collaborating, you are able to provide feedback and give your opinion to others is also important. The finale to me is reaching a common goal and having respect for each other's opinion. In both my APCSP and Entrepreneurship classes, they both require collaboration. My classes have lots of projects which require group and partner work. I love listening to the ideas and feedback that students give to each other in a respectful manner. Teaching collaboration skills is one of the most important skills that I teach. One of my favorite examples is of a new after school club that I've started that centers around students creating a website (coding from scratch using HTML & CSS) that will showcase the original artwork, writing and video games of our school's students. In addition to learning new coding skills, students are learning how to organize themselves into creative teams and to work together to produce a tangible results that will be shared with the public. It is definitely a soft skill that can be honed and developed as a student in a classroom. I believe we have the power and ability to help students grow into great collaborators.
2. I use collaboration differently in my classroom based on the assignment and type of content I'm trying to deliver. For projects, students do a lot of self-collaboration where they have to work together towards a common goal. Toward the end of one of my entry-level courses, students will design and create the design for a playground which requires the entire class to collaborate for a common Theme and common parts of the playground. It's sometimes crazy to manage but it's really teaching them a valuable skill for working with their peers, even if they're not necessarily friends with them.

Collaboration is one of the top skills valued by employers, so it is imperative that we (teachers and educators) take time to teach these skills and encourage our students to develop great collaboration skills.

Collaboration is important in many circumstances. While you can learn from one another, more so with learning to work with different personalities, work ethics, responsibilities, etc. There is great value in sharing ideas and putting heads together, there are drawbacks as well. Collaboration is a skill should be familiar with.

Collaboration is really important because life is a group project. No matter where you go or what you do for a career, you have to be able to work with others. Teaching middle school I found it a lot easier to get students to work with each other. They may not have always been happy about it or they may have argued but they did interact. Teaching high school the student almost always try to do what I call split and splice to complete group work. they split up the tasks and that is the last time they talk to each other until they put it all together to turn in. I'm very interested in learning better ways to help and encourage students collaborate more effectively. I like the idea of a collaboration log as shown in the video, so students can really reflect on their own efforts and the efforts of group members throughout a project. I agree with other participants who have reiterated the great importance of teaching and developing collaboration skills in the classroom.

Collaboration is very important for students to learn the value of teamwork and experience working with others so it will not be a shock when they get in the real world. I try to have students do peer-tutoring, groupwork and working with different students not just the same.

Collaboration: Key to Success

Collaboration is vital in education. It enhances critical thinking by exposing students to diverse perspectives, improves communication skills, and fosters empathy and social awareness. While some may fear it leads to dependency, structured collaboration promotes accountability. I believe that once students begin to master that balance everyone develops the overall key to success which is an interconnected essential skill of teamwork and problem-solving.

In my classroom how well students collaborate can mean they have a finished tasty product or a nasty mess; finishing on time or running out of time!
