The bond between brothers and sisters

"He left
behind him myself and a sister, both born in an hour.
If the heavens had been pleased, would we had so
ended! But you, sir, altered that, for some hour before
you took me from the breach of the sea was my sister
drowned."
(2.1.18-22 )

"A lady, sir, though it was said she much resembled
me, was yet of many accounted beautiful.
But though I could not with such estimable wonder
overfar believe that, yet thus far I will boldly publish
her: she bore a mind that envy could not but call fair.
She is drowned already, sir, with salt water, though I
seem to drown her remembrance again with more.”
(2.1.24-31)

Sebastian is telling Antonio how his father died and left behind his twin sister with him. If Antonio hadn’t saved him, he would’ve died with her too. Then he continues to talk about Viola and how many people thought she was so beautiful but he knew his sister had a beautiful mind. He said she drowned in saltwater and his salty tears will drown her memory again. This truly captivates his feelings towards Viola, how much he cared for her and loved her.

"Bhai Dooj"
http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-diwali-2015-why-do-we-celebrate-bhai-dooj-2144703
In Hinduism, there is a tradition called Bhai Dooj, this day is when brothers and sisters perform a ritual for each other. The sisters perform aarti for their brother and offer prayers for the. Then the brothers promise to protect their sister and give them gifts and money. This ritual is out of love and respect between siblings and Shakespeare's theme about family love can clearly be seen in this culture where siblings support and love each other.

“Let me speak a little. This youth that you see here
I snatched one half out of the jaws of death,
Relieved him with such sanctity of love,
And to his image, which methought did promise
Most venerable worth, did I devotion.”
(3.4.378-382)

When Officers come to arrest Antonio he does not worry much about it but he asks Cesario who he thinks is Sebastian, to return his purse. When Cesario denies of having his purse or even knowing him, he says these lines. He explains how he saved Sebastian’s life and cared for him lovingly until he was healthy. He was loyal to him and devoted himself for the sake of Sebastian. This shows that true friendship is another form of love.

Picasso Pablo, "The Friendship" 1908
http://blog.orangecarton.com/nurture-friendship-with-these-world-famous-paintings/
Pablo made this painting to show friendship in his own style, because it as I said earlier, its form of love.

"Oh, you are sick of self-love, Malvolio, and taste with
a distempered appetite. To be generous, guiltless,
and of free disposition is to take those things for
bird-bolts that you deem cannon-bullets.”
(1.5.89-92)

Olivia asked Malvolio if he thought the fool was getting funnier, to which he replied in a negative manner. Then she told Malvolio he was so full of self-love it was making him peevish. If he was generous, innocent, and kind, he wouldn’t mind what the fool says. The fool's comments would be like harmless firecrackers to him instead of harmful bullets; but Malvolio was obsessed with loving himself that he thought he was better than everyone else.

Clampett Bob, "Daffy Duck" 1937
http://www.weirdworm.com/the-10-most-egocentric-cartoon-characters/
Duffy Duck is a cartoon character who is very similar to Malvolio.

"I left no ring with her. What means this lady?
Fortune forbid my outside have not charmed her!
She made good view of me, indeed so much
That sure methought her eyes had lost her tongue,
For she did speak in starts distractedly.
She loves me, sure! The cunning of her passion
Invites me in this churlish messenger.”
(2.2.17-23)

Olivia sends a ring after Cesario through Malvolio, “to return the ring which Cesario gave to her” from the Duke. When Viola is given the ring, she knows that she didn’t give any ring to Olivia and realizes Olivia has fallen in love with Cesario. Then she says these lines. She didn’t give Olivia a ring, what does Olivia mean by giving Cesario one. Hopefully, Olivia doesn’t have a crush on Cesario (Viola), her appearance did not attract her. Then Viola says that Olivia must like her because she kept on looking at him (Cesario) and seemed distracted. Olivia was attracted to Cesario (Viola because of his womanly ways, so even at Shakespeares time, love had no limits but it was frowned upon in society. However, nowadays everyone is getting their rights. There is a Human Rights campaign called love has no gender which is fighting for the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender.

2016 SparkesNote LLC
http://www.sparknotes.com/

"Love has no gender"
http://brandchannel.com/2015/03/10/unilever-and-the-ad-council-on-why-love-has-no-labels-hit-home/
