Chapters: 1-5
On page 16, Amal shows that she is caring by thinking “But how could I stay outside when something was obviously wrong? I’m worried I told her.” She said that to her mom to tell her something was not right. That shows that she is caring for her mom.
On page 11, Amal shows she is caring “ You can’t spend so much time with him”. ‘’ But he’s like our brother”. “ How can I not see him?”. She was saying that she cares about Omar and still want’s to play with Omar even though if she turns 12.
In Chapter 1 on page 2 Amal says “I’m so sorry I cant help today”. She is always helping her teacher in chapter one so she is helpful, that is the character trait I think fits her.also she tells her that helping her at the end of the day is her favorite part of the day. This is one of Amal’s character traits.

Amal, the main character,
is caring. On page 23. It says,”She’s always tired after a baby I’d born,” Amal was thinking about her mom and was caring by thinking about her feelings. Also on pg 28, “ Now I have missed 9 days of school. My mother was still not better.” Amal stayed home from school to care for her mother. Not only that but on page 44 it says,” How’s Miss Sadia?” When she was not at school she still asked about her teacher.

Page 54-55:
Standing up for herself/Brave
Amal stands up for herself when she talks back to her dad about insulting Jawad Sahib. An example of this, is on page 54, where the author writes, “ He took my things, and wouldn’t give them back!” This is an example of why Amal is a very brave person and stands up for herself when she needs to.

Page 68:
Caring
Another trait of Amal is that she is caring. An example of this is on page 68 where it says, “What if you ran away? Maybe hid in my house?(Hafsa) Hafsa, I couldn’t do that... I can’t. It wouldn't be safe, not for me and definitely not for you.(Amal)” This shows that Amal is a person that is caring about her loved ones being safe.

Amal is determined in chapter 21-24. She went into Jawad Sahib's room and found tons of books on the shelves. On page 104, it says: "I tucked the book under my arm, obscured by my shawl, and hurried to my room." She was "borrowing a book" from Jawad Sahib's room's bookshelf. This was the first time Amal felt happy at Jawad Sahib's estate, because of one book. She missed the feeling of going to school and learning. She was so desperate, just to read one book.

We think that Amal is brave, because on page 79, it says, “I couldn’t move, rooted by his gaze. Breathe, I reminded myself. I would not let him see me cower.”

We also think that she is caring, because on page 80, the book says, “I grabbed a rag from the counter and leaned down to clean the mess.” She is willing to help when someone else has an accident.
