Coca-Cola is a very American product, and this food/drink reference illustrates the divide between the Chinese mother and the American-born daughter.

The swan from the Joy Luck Club in the introduction can be related to both culture, tradition, and hope. Most obviously you can see it representing culture. The mother coming to America had a swan and when she came to America it was taken away leaving her with only a feather. This relates to the daughter and their culture as first generation Asian-Americans. It shows how their culture was somewhat taken away from them and they were only left with a little of it.

Jing-Mei’s visit to see her sisters was hesitant at first. She was nervous her sisters would be mad that Jing Mei did not tell them of the passing of their mother. Once Jing Mei got to China, she felt different - more like her mother, more Chinese. Traveling to China helped Jing Mei realize that China was calling her back -> that she needed to go to China and see her sisters to fully realize the impact of her mother’s wishes and her mother’s Chinese prophecies. Jing Mei could not have realized the pure intentions of her mother in America and needed to go back to her roots.
