The Space Place is a museum and theatre located in the building of the Carter Observatory. We were able to take a tour through the stars using the power of technology. Using the theatre, we learnt about the different constellations and planets that were able to be seen in the sky that night. This could also relate to New Zealand history because of the Southern Cross. You were able to see the Southern Cross constellation in the sky that night too.

One of the many activities we took part in during our trip down to Wellington, was visiting Weltec and looking into physics. There were a few stations, set up in the physics room, one of which being weights and different springs and contraptions. We had to place 1 kg weights on the scales before measuring how far its gone down and how many times the dial has turned. It wasn the most entertaining task but we did learn a bit about weight and measurement. This topic reminds me about the Ohakea Airforce base and the helicopters as physics are part of helicopters, taking off, flying etc.

Many of the student’s favourites was the robotics, my favourite was also the robotics. The most challenging part was when we had to find where to put the battery. This was very similar STEAM when we created robots which we used to fight the others.

I think this relates to the scope on a sniper or any other gun with a scope because it's used to aim. I think this is effective because it helps you measure the ground and how high something is. This makes me think about how long it would take to learn all about land surveying.

Space place...
Space place is located near the balsamic gardens on top of a hill in Wellington. Space place is also called a Planetarium or a observatory. We were introduced to a lady who worked at Space place and we were shown a movie about space and the different planets in our universe. After the movie we had a little wander around the museum there. There were many cool experiments and facts about space in the museum that were interesting and amusing. I think this relates to the museum in Te papa because there is also a cool area there to do with space. This makes me think about what actually is up in space in all the different universes and if there are many other living things in space. I think this is effective because space is probably one of the most interesting things that people always wonder about and people would love to discover what else is in space.

The smaller of the two is called the Mako or the A109 and the other being the NH90 which is used for combat and military force. These two types of helicopters are held in two hangers apart from each other, with each hanger holding around about four aircraft in each of them. This makes me think about the Bridge Pa which is a smaller air base/port where they have a few hangers holding aircraft.

We learnt all about the jobs that are involved with the base, and had the opportunity to sit in two of the helicopters, one being one biggest in New Zealand. Weltec stands for Wellington technology and when we were there we did three different activities, robotics, physics and land surveying. Land surveying was my favorite because I never knew what land surveying was before I went to weltec. Land surveying is when you measure how high the measurement is and if it is above or below sea level. Roadworks companies use them to see if the road is flat or uneven. This relates to scopes on a gun because you have to sight in the scope so then when you shoot the gun it is agreit.

Physics

We went to Weltec. We met James in physics, and one of the activities was timing weights to see which was the fastest. Another activity you do is you put some weights on a contraption that stretches a rubber tube from a speargun. You measure how far down it goes and how far up it goes at a time depending on how heavy the weight is, is how far up or down it goes. The thing we were proving was a spring stretches more regular than rubber. We also had to put weights on a contraption with different places to put the weights on, to balance a block of wood. This relates to everyday life.

Meridian Energy building

On the last day of Room 7’s Wellington trip the class walked to the 5 star energy efficient Meridian building. This means the building is eco friendly and pretty much runs by itself. At this building 1 third of New Zealand's power is run by Jeff from Meridian.

When we visited Jeff's office he was interrupted by many calls from around New Zealand with people from power stations asking Jeff to do something to increase or decrease New Zealand's power situation. He also showed us the amount of power New Zealand's use at certain times of the day and night It was amazing because on the graph we saw in the morning the power was at its highest, at night the graph showed a dramatic decrease. This is because we use little power whilst we are sleeping, However in the morning when everyone is rushing to get out of the house everything in the house is turned on, this relates to everyone because we all use the power that the Meridian building manages.

When we went to Wellington we went to Te papa. We saw a whale's skeleton and a blue whale's heart, we could squash 18 people inside of it. We also saw the colossal squid, it has been there long enough it,s falling apart. We went into the earthquake house, it simulates a 6.6 magnitude earthquake. The wharenui in Te papa was built so everyone had a Marae. The Gallipoli war exhibition was really cool I was amazed on how the giant statues looked so real.
