In the 1970´s (specifically 1977) he conducted a study to test the false consensus effect, the participants were asked to read about a certain conflict and were told there were 2 ways to respond. The main thing they studied was to see which options the participants picked. They found that most of the participants would assume that others would guess or think the same thing as them, regardless of what they actually picked. This study correlated with what Ross dubbed the False consensus effect itś when people think that others think the exact same way as you do when most of the time others don´t think the same as you.

Even though they were wrong most of the time. And when the participants were asked to pick and then describe the person that they think would choose the opposite of them. They made really harsh and radical predictions about that person. This study confirmed the FCE, which confirms that most people believe that others will think the same as them when they actually don´t.
