Maya Angelou was one to fight for freedom. On April 4, 1928, Marguerite Ann Johnson, known to the world as Maya Angelou, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Due to her parents’ tumultuous marriage and subsequent divorce, Angelou went to live with her paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas at an early age. Her older brother, Bailey, gave Angelou her nickname “Maya.”

Returning to her mother’s care briefly at the age of seven, Angelou was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. He was later jailed and then killed when released from jail. Believing that her confession of the trauma had a hand in the man’s death, Angelou became mute for six years. During this time, and into her teens, she again lived with her grandmother in Arkansas.

Throughout her childhood, she wrote essays, poetry, and kept a journal. When she returned to Arkansas, she took an interest in poetry and memorized works by Shakespeare and Poe.

Shortly after Martin Luther King Jr. died, she went to a meeting and was inspired to write the poem "Caged Bird" to deal with the death of a friend. She also had many personal struggles with racism that really affected her.

Metaphor: His bars of rage / a grave of dreams. I think the author added this to show how the caged bird feels. It helps the reader understand the caged bird's sorrow.
Personification: Sighing trees / shadow shouts / nightmare scream. I think the author added this to express how each bird is feeling. It helps the reader understand more of what each bird is seeing and feeling.
Tone: The caged bird sings with a fearful trill. I think the author added this because they wanted the readers to understand the type of song the bird is singing.
Point of View: A free bird / a caged bird (third person). I think this was in the third person because the author was referring to people in her life who were treated this way.
Imagery: His wings dip in the orange sun rays. I think the author added this to show the joy birds have in freedom and it helps the reader understand the importance of being in the sky is to the free and caged bird.
