Research- Be More Chill ran Off-Broadway at the Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center. It began previews July 26, 2018, officially opening on August 9, 2018. It was originally scheduled to close on September 23, 2018, but was given a one-week extension after selling out and closed on September 30, 2018. In total there are 18 musical numbers in act one and 9 in act two.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_More_Chill_(musical)

“More than survive.” That’s all Jeremy Heere wants out of high school. But looking up from the bottom of the social ladder, there’s little hope for the uncool Jeremy. But what if there was an easy way to change all that? Enter the SQUIP, a Japanese nanocomputer in the form of an easy-to-swallow pill. The SQUIP will implant itself in your brain and tell you what to wear, what to say, and how to act to achieve ultimate coolness. Seems like an easy choice, right? But when things with the SQUIP take an unexpected, darker turn, is Jeremy willing to lose his best friend, his crush, his classmates, and the whole world, all in an effort to be more chill? Set to a hot pop-rock score by Joe Iconis, Be More Chill is a hilarious sci-fi tale of high school and one boy’s quest to fit in.

Be More Chill (Musical) Plot & Characters | StageAgent

Relevance- Research is relevant when needing to understand the concept and meaning of a musical, due to it ensuring I can have a correct understanding of the musical that we will be performing. Some more in depth things it can be a positive for is helping me understand all characters in depth and truly getting to know what I would need to do to portray my character of choice.

Action plan- Now I have completed all of my research on the musical I will now proceed to choose and character I want to audition for. When choosing a character it is mostly important to choose a character if I am able to suit them and have the skill set the character would need to to portray. Always picking a character that is best suited to you would mean you will be more successful rather than picking a character for the fame or popularity in a show. Due to all of these thoughts I had a deep look through all characters and finally decided someone who I would be able to portray extremely well was, Chloe Valentine.

Completed

20/01/25

Research- Chloe Valentine is a popular girl and a junior in high school. She is best friends with Brooke. She's one of the most popular girls in school and often overpowering in personality, and a bit of a diva at times. She is often portrayed as a caucasian female with light brown or dirty blonde hair. Her outfit is usually a sparkly bomber jacket, a crop top, sunglasses, and jewelry. She is extremely attractive and often wears loads of makeup. An alternative outfit portrayed is the one worn in the Original Off-Broadway run of Be More Chill: a black headband, a patterned white jacket, purple shirt, black skirt, black thigh high socks, and silver shoes.

Chloe Valentine | Be More Chill (Musical) Wiki | Fandom

Relevance- When preparing for my audition I had to choose a song and a monologue. Due to Chloe having many signing number I decided to sing "Do you wanna hang?" This song is one of her shortest songs however gave me a great insight into what type of attitude and voice she produces during her singing. I ensured to practice this excessively until I had nailed what I wanted to do. When choosing my monologue we had a free choice to perform anything of our pick however I decided I wanted to pick something with some sort of connection or relevance to the character I was auditioning for. Due to this I chose a brilliant piece in which it involved a woman at a AA meeting and was express her horrible and dark thoughts, she shows she is mentally unstable and eventually breaks down. However all of this was an act and she begins laughing she reveals that everything she said was a lie and she did it for attention. This monologue I chose to do can in some ways be seen to similar to Chloe in the piece "The Smartphone Hour". this is a piece in which Chloe begins to lie and manipulate people with a rumor she heard from her friend.

Action Plan- Now that I have chosen everything I need for my audition I will begin to thoroughly practice an learn lines instantly. I will spend plenty of hours of my day to practice and rehearsed to ensure my audition goes smoothly. Once I had nailed everything it was time for audition day and show my lectures what I have rehearsed at home.

Completed

20/01/25

Research- Being that Chloe is popular she also holds herself to a high standard. It’s not that she looks at other people as lower or inferior, it’s just that she won’t let anyone get near her spotlight. She’s the most popular girl, she has all the hot gossip, she’s the funniest, the smartest, and she won’t let anyone near that hierarchy. The reason she is popular is most likely because she dated Jake and it is evident that they had a pretty serious (at least to her) relationship. But, now she is on and off with him somewhat and there isn’t really anything left to gain by dating him (though I can’t say that is the reason they dated because that was before the show and there isn’t much context.) because she’s already the most popular girl so why is she so overprotective of him? When she confronts Christine at play rehearsal it’s obvious she is aware that Jake is interested in her so she uses her manipulative words to discourage the thought that Christine has any chance with him. Let’s make it clear that it’s not that she doesn’t like Christine but that she doesn’t like the fact that Jake is interested in her.

Pros:

She obviously loves her besties and will lay down her life and reputation for them. For her they are her scapegoat, she can vent to them and talk to them just to take it all away. She is obviously upfront and will defend them if need be, and hangs out with them outside of school because they’re close.

Chloe is popular, hottest girl in school. She is liked and looked up to. Though, her reputation is more that of a slut rather than a spunky popular teen. She is still seen as higher up and a role model for those who aspire to be cool and popular like her. Who wouldn’t want to be her friend?

Chloe is very confident and loves herself, there are minimal changes she would make to herself. And, as we all know, if someone can’t love themselves- how then hell they gonna love anybody else? She is capable of much love (that she shows with her friends) and it’s even confirmed that Chloe’s Squip would be herself! But, she struggles with opening up.

Cons:

Chloe is bad with opening up, which often ends with her and her friends/lovers being hurt. She is bad with expressing her feelings and covers it up with sex, gossip, and cattiness. Which, has an equally as bad effect on herself as it does everyone else.

This girl spreads rumors like wildfire. This can end up completely obliterating somebody’s reputation which is further enacted by her clique that tweets and texts like crazy.

She is upfront and manipulative. Her first interaction with Christine was her using her manipulative nature to discourage Christine and even make her feel bad for liking /thinking she has a chance with Jake. It’s obvious she still had some feeling for Jake but still deflected her emotions by treating him like an object and protecting him like a pet.

Character Analysis: Chloe Valentine | Be More Chill! By going so in depth on a character it can make you see things other cant therefore this role can only be performed a specific way to you in your mind. Another reason I see it as a good thing of my depth research is due to me researching many different people that played this character and I can see the difference in each performance. Any research I have completed will make me become a better version of Chloe everyday and every rehearsal.

Action Point- Due to me completing my final research on my character before rehearsals I can now go into rehearsals with a strong confident mind and showcase what I have seen online of how Chloe is portray. Overtime this role will adapt and merged into my own version however that is all due to me doing my research and having a complete understanding of who Chloe is and what her character is about.

Complete

20/01/25

Research- In theatre, the concept of blocking refers to the deliberate positioning and choreography of actors on stage. This critical component of theatrical production unfolds during rehearsals under the thoughtful guidance of both the director and the actors. While the director sets the artistic direction for the scene, actors contribute by navigating the stage in a manner that feels instinctive and authentic. Blocking involves several key elements including the precise locations where actors stand, known as stage positions, as well as their movements, orientations, and interactions. In theatre, the definition of blocking is not only about whether an actor stands or sits, or their orientation towards the audience—it also heavily focuses on their specific placement on stage. To effectively convey an actor’s position during a performance, it's helpful to visualise the stage as divided into a nine-square grid when looking down from above. The lower part of this grid is closest to the audience, marking the front of the stage, while the upper part denotes the rear of the stage. Describing an actor’s position within these nine distinct sections can effectively communicate where they are during a performance.

In theatre, the definition of blocking is not only about whether an actor stands or sits, or their orientation towards the audience—it also heavily focuses on their specific placement on stage.

Before you can understand why your character is saying what they’re saying, you need to know what’s happening in the play.

Research- A choreographer is an artist who designs and creates dance sequences, collaborating with performers and directors to bring movement and storytelling to life in a variety of productions. Choreography is the art of designing and arranging movements in a sequence, transforming music and emotions into visual storytelling. It encompasses various elements:

Movement Composition: Choreographers create harmonious sequences of movement, considering dynamics, transitions, and spatial relationships.

Musicality: Choreography intertwines with music, with movements synchronizing with rhythm, melody, and emotional nuances.

Spatial Awareness: Understanding how dancers interact with space is essential for creating visually engaging and dynamic routines.

Emotional Expression: Choreographers use movement to evoke specific emotions and convey narratives, resonating with audiences on a deeper level.

Collaboration: Working collaboratively with dancers and creative teams is crucial for bringing choreographic concepts to fruition.

What Does a Choreographer Do & How To Become One - GRAMMY GO

Relevance- During our rehearsal progress myself and a few of students will be contributing to the group via choreography. Due to us contributing out own mind set and skills to the choreography we are able to create many more opportunity for ourselves and the rest of the group. We will also be able to learn exceptional things which can help us in our future journeys. Another good thing abut us contributing in this way includes the fact that we can also be a helper to anyone in out group who is struggling to pick up the choreography.

Action Point- The few of us who have this job role, will get together occasional and share ideas of choreography. We will set targets for each other and ensure we come back to show our progress. One task we could do is create a count of 8 at home and show to other girls so we can create a small dance piece with the mixture of everyone choreography. We can also make a miniature schedule for specific days we will take and hour out of our day to speak to each other and choreography new stuff or work on things we've already learnt.

Ongoing

Research- A harmony is a series of notes that blends with a song’s melody to add character and please the ears.
