In Ratliff's own words, transmission is when a singer goes "transparent" in their voices. "They seem to become the property of other forces... They minimize themselves; not worried about outcome, they represent the forces in a pure state. They seem released from anxiety" I think what he's meaning to say is that tone matters over everything else. If you say humble things in your music, but the tone doesn't back it up, the song will be seen as hypocritical. I agree with his opinion on transmission - the tone and the message have to match up for the song to make sense.

I listened to this per Ratliff's suggestion, and I understood that an element of the music went missing when he said the name Julia, but I don't agree with it's importance. I think in this example, Ratliff is reading into it too heavily.
https://youtu.be/NWjpgv57X1s

In this song, there's a great deal of autotune. The chorus is slightly autotuned, but when transitioning into each verse, the autotune is dropped. The chorus is basically saying he's a bad man and that no one should touch him. In every verse, he goes into detail on why he's not a good guy. His chorus may be seen as a joke, but his tone and drop of autotune in each verse tells his listeners that what he's saying is true.

It's very sad because he really did dote on his mum. Julia was the light of John's life, he idolised her: 'Julia' was his mother's song. She was a beautiful woman with long red hair. She was fun-loving and musical too; she taught him banjo chords, and any woman in those days who played a banjo was a special, artistic person. It was bohemian to do that. John and I were both in love with his mum. It just knocked him for six when she died. I always thought it was bad enough my mother dying and what I had to go through, but that was an illness so there was some way you could understand it, but in John's case, the horror of reliving that accident ... Oh, my God! That always stayed with me. | „
—Paul McCartney, Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, p.48-49, 1997~
