The carnival began in 1959 as a small event organized by Trinidadian community activist Claudia Jones. It was originally held indoors as a response to the race riots that had occurred in the area in the years prior. The first carnival was held at St. Pancras Town Hall and featured Caribbean music, dancing, and food.In 1964, the carnival moved outdoors to the streets of Notting Hill and quickly grew in size and popularity. It also became more inclusive, with participants from a wide range of cultural backgrounds joining in the celebration.
