Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi is a high-fantasy novel that isn't without similarities to other works in this genre, particularly in terms of themes. Themes of oppression, resistance and revolution are seen again in the novel. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins comes to mind. Both novels portray societies where groups of people are oppressed by certain dictatorial powers. Children of Blood and Bone portrays the Maji losing their power and magic at the hands of the monarchy, whereas The Hunger Games tells about the district unions, which are ruled by the resentment of the Capitol. The protagonists oppose the corrupt institutions, Zélie in the Children of Blood and Bone and Katniss in The Hunger Games, and begin revolutions dedicated to the pursuit of liberation and equality.

Therefore, the thematic structure of Children of Blood and Bone is opposite that of The Shadowshaper Cypher, written by Daniel José Older. Both stories expose the seminal place within a person of ancestry and identity in the reclamation of power, though the protagonists operate in totally different worlds where magic is being robbed away from them. Each of them furthermore explores the cultural elements of magic and mythology and questions what they're developing into.

Other works, in tying into Children of Blood and Bone, share themes of resistance, power, and the pursuit of justice in a fantastical environment, though they offer themselves as a combination of thrillers, coming-of-age tales, and the richness of culture.

Children of Blood and Bone, a YA fantasy book by Tomi Adeyemi with West African influences, centers on Zélie, a young girl who is battling to bring back magic in a country where it has been violently banned. While no novel completely mimics the storyline of Children of Blood and Bone, some contain thematic elements that appeal with readers who appreciated Adeyemi's work.

“An Ember in the Ashes”, written by Sabaa Tahir, is a prominent example. Similar to Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone, Sabaa Tahir's “An Ember in the Ashes” depicts characters battling for freedom under the Martial Empire, a tyrannical government (Goodreads). Strong characters who lead rebellions against their oppressive rulers and commence quests of self-discovery are highlighted in both books.

“The Shadowshaper Cypher” by Daniel José Older examines the rediscovery of a hidden magical history, much like Children of Blood and Bone. Similar to Zélie Adebola, Sierra Santiago fights against forces who try to take advantage of and control her magical gifts and cultural identity (Scholastic Canada). Though “The Shadowshaper Cypher” centers on a modern Brooklyn setting with a distinctive Afro-Caribbean magical system, both books highlight themes of resistance, self-discovery, and the strength of optimism in the face of injustice.

Similar to Children of Blood and Bone, books like “The Shadowshaper Cypher” and “An Ember in the Ashes” examine identity, resistance, and the might of magic. These stories not only delight readers but also elicit reflection on history, culture, and the fight for freedom and justice. They serve as a reminder that even under the direst circumstances, hopefulness and resiliency can bring about change.

A Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi is similar in theme and plot to several other fantasy books, yet it differs from them in its deeply embedded roots in West African mythology and also in its emphasis on oppression and rebellion. A novel with an equivalent structure is An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. Both novels feature young protagonists fighting against a repressive government, are presented in dual narrative and feature strong cultural influences Tahir's drawing on Ancient Rome. Another comparison would be Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo where the protagonist discovers a special and powerful ability that could change the fate of their world. Like Zélie Alina battles against an oppressive ruling authority while attempting to discover who she is and the burden of her new magic.

But Children of Blood and Bone is unique in the way it weaves contemporary issues such as racial injustice into fantasy. It's not just an adventure novel about magic it's about claiming identity and fighting for justice. What do you think? Are there other books that blend mythology and social issues as well as this one?

In the novel, a young girl named Zélie Adebola attempts to restore magic to her world after it has been stolen from her people. Other literary works also contain themes of resistance and power struggles.

One such book is Victoria Aveyard's The Red Queen, in which people are classified based on their power and society is divided into power-based strata.
Children of Blood and Bone is by Tomi Adeyemi, and its central ideas include oppression, magic, and rebellion, as with several other fantasy novels. Strong to be compared would, therefore, be An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. It is interesting to note that both the novels have a central character, the protagonist, who comes to reveal her strength and magic while fighting with a regime oppressing them. Indeed, much like the other students abroad in an Ember in the Ashes, that exposure thrusts Laia into a dangerous world of resistance, discovering resilience and hidden power along the way.

Similar to the above is Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone. Both stories feature worlds where magic has been suppressed by those in power, and the protagonists reclaim magic. Much like Zélie, Alina Starkov deals with a newfound daunting responsibility.

Also, identity, justice, and resistance against the structural oppression are the themes that these books will have in common with Children of Blood and Bone. In addition, they develop rich, multi-layered worlds, more affected by real histories and cultures making them great reads.

Written by Tomi Adeyemi, Children of Blood and Bone forms together a fantasy literature filling the pages with oppression, magic, and revolution. Many other books share adjacent narratives and themes and are, therefore, complementary for readers interested in Adeyemi's work. Great among those is An Ember in the Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir. The validity of An Ember in the Ashes as a sibling of Children of Blood and Bone can be brought in by contrasting two protagonists from a marginalized group resisting brutalism in a world full of oppression. The two novels offer characters that will have theirs set in confrontation with the forces that seek to suppress them to win back their power.

The Gilded Ones embraces a theme that is similar to Children of Blood and Bone by presenting a young female protagonist who does things not attuned to societal norms to discover her hidden strength. She is on a journey of self-discovery, rebellion, just like Zélie. The novels use fantasy as tools for exploring very real issues...from racism to colonialism to authoritarianism. They remind the reader about resilience, justice, and the reclaiming of self amidst conditions of systemic oppression.

Children of Blood and Bone is the most popular novel among other Tomi Adeyemi novels which mostly emphasize oppression and rebellion as well as magic. The same things have been captured in An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.

In An Ember in the Ashes, Laia was similarly drawn to a furious battle against the oppressive regimes, just as Zélie was. Both are not born into power, but must rise against brutal forces. Besides, Adeyemi's imagination isn't borrowed only from her experiences, West Africa, but Tahir's world has plenty of echoes from ancient Rome, adding even more cultural depths.

Also, just like Shadow and Bone where Alina discovers a unique magical gift that makes her the target of powerful forces, these girls experience the weight of their newfound magical responsibility such as-Zélie's consequence-the very real pressure of strength on the shoulders of a young woman. Both of these are also about themes like self-discovery, oppression, and a fight for liberation.

What these stories compelling are their connections to real-world struggles, more than just imaginary-in fact fighting for change.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi compares to a number of other fantasy novels that contain themes of magic, oppression, and revolution. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is a good point of comparison. Both books exist within a world where magic is feared and suppressed, and the protagonist must learn to master their powers in an attempt to restore balance. Zélie, as with Alina in Shadow and Bone, embarks on a journey of discovering herself while battling powerful enemies.Another such novel is An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. Both books are set in a world with tyrant governments, in which the protagonists fight to reclaim their freedom. Like Zélie, Laia of An Ember in the Ashes is also in a battle against a violent regime, and hence their existence is suspenseful as well as emotionally charged. In addition, The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna also explores the same ideas of domination of society, downtrodden masses discovering their strength, and a strong female protagonist fighting against oppression. All these novels blend West African, Middle Eastern, or other cultures into their worldbuilding, which makes them rich in lore and mythology.Gleaning from these universal themes, Children of Blood and Bone is one of the great fantasy novels which inspires readers with stories of rebellion and self-empowerment.

Another book that has a comparable plot to Children of Blood and Bone is Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. Both novels take place in a world where magic (or "Grisha power" in "Shadow and Bone") is feared, manipulated, and politicized. Similar to Zélie in Children of Blood and Bone, the protagonist of Shadow and Bone, Alina, discovers a unique power that has the ability to change her world. Both protagonists also face internal strife, oppressive governments, and treacherous journeys in their mission to regain balance and justice. Both books also feature deeply developed fantasy worlds with deep cultural roots. Zélie's draws from West African mythology, while Bardugo's Grishverse is based on Russian culture. Another similarity lies in the concept of regaining identity and power in times of oppression, which is central to both tales. According to book reviews, the parallelism between the two books makes them appealing to readers who enjoy fantasy with a strong female protagonist, high stakes, and social commentary.

Throughout Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi a reader can identify thematic and plot parallels with other young adult fantasy novels that investigate magic alongside oppression and resistance. The most prominent parallel exists between An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. Through their strong female leads these two novels depict female characters battling totalitarian rule against their people as they weave together cinematic fight sequences with psychological development. In Shadow and Bone Leigh Bardugo presents readers with a magical conflict between sects of society as a capable heroine reveals her talents to remake an unjust order. The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna explores a world where a young girl discovers her dangerous traits through a sisterhood who rise against social power dynamics. All these books employ fantasy storytelling to investigate modern-day problems which include racism and cultural identity issues alongside inequality. Each story contains elaborate constructed settings along with unique spellcraft mechanisms in addition to humans dealing with personal beliefs as they battle against oppression and authority. The same capture will hook readers who appreciated Children of Blood and Bone because their stories demand the same strong response.
