Structure of CFY

Will the five CFY courses still be organised as a single cohesive programme from an administrative perspective? Specifically:

- Will the curriculum still be managed by the CFY Education Committee?

- Will there still be a CFY Board of Study which reports into the Education Committee?

- Will there still be CFY-specific exam boards? If so, who will be the Chair and Deputy next year (currently: Jill Kirby and Chris Stocking, both of whom work in MAH)?

If the answer to any of the above questions is “no”, who will be responsible for communicating this to FY faculty, and how will these areas/tasks be organised in future?

Course Admin

Supporting Course Coordinators. What Grade 5 (or above) support will be available to CCs on the days that Chris is not working? We often receive urgent queries about assessments and student support, for example.

Dept office. Will we still be located in Arts B150? Will DLS colleagues remain in their current locations?

Degree choice process. A lot of the “bespoke” CFY work during the year revolves around students choosing their Y1 degree courses and the FY PS team recording these choices. Since Student Records ultimately are responsible for entering this information centrally and rolling the students’ records over, is there any scope for them to be more involved in this process/take it over?

Our main concern in this area is how the work currently covered by Karen will get done. Much of it is complex and emotionally-demanding Grade 5 work that is tailored to CFY requirements. We are concerned that Lottie won’t have capacity to take on all of this work. Chris might be able to do some of it, and we understand that some processes are to be centralised, but we need to work out the details of the transition before Karen leaves. Major areas of work include:

Curriculum and Assessment

As with Student Experience, we’re concerned about the capacity within the team and beyond to take on Laurie’s work. Chris has experience in this area and will be able to do some of it, but it is anticipated that quite a lot of further support at Grade 5 will be required. The work can be grouped into three main areas, and we need to decide who will lead and support each:

Exam boards. During peak periods, this requires more than 1 FTE. If some work is to be done by teams within MAH, will this only be for the FY course based in MAH (our second smallest course), or will it be for all five courses (the others being based in Engineering, Business, LPS and Psychology)?
Curriculum development and quality assurance
Assessment management and oversight

Not necessarily an "activity" but signposting students to the correct process for their concern i.e. e-submission error process or EC claim process, and knowing what these processes involve so students aren't given the wrong information before we're copied in to the email thread
