The main idea of the film I believe was to share with the audience the importance of staying motivated. A part that was very significant throughout the film was the fact that Raimundo was able to still write poetry despite his unfortunate living circumstances. Raimundo used poetry as a way to express how he felt and to ignore the fact he was living under hundreds of plastic bags. His poetry were a way of writing down how he felt into something beautiful. Shalla wanted the audience to see how terrible Raimundo's life was and to see how he still remained so focused.

Because of this, his poems are used to convey the overall purpose of the visual text; not giving up on your aspirations no matter how dire the circumstances are. - Tim Morris

By publishing this video on Facebook it can be assumed that the intended audience is wide ranged. Facebook is a popular social media platform that attracts many people from around the world and therefore the video can be viewed by a wide variety of people. In my opinion Facebook's purpose for posting the video was to hopefully instill empathy on us. Their objective was to remind the audience that everyone matters, by publicly sharing Raimundo's story Facebook hoped that the audience would have a wake up call and reconsider avoiding those who are homeless.
-Jenn Rodriguez

The text used throughout the visual helps contribute to the overall rhetorical purpose by emphasising the phrases that he uses like “The Conditioned”. This visual also shows his writing in a font that simulates that actual handwriting he may have had when creating these poems. By putting up the words of his poem on the screen it helps reach the watcher more closely, and allows them to feel a personal connection to what is being shown. Listening and reading something allows them to be reached by more senses and can have a bigger impact than just reaching them by one sense.

I agree with Tim that "The Conditioned" helped the audience understand his personal thoughts and emotions. I also agree that the author purposely displayed some of Raimundo's poetry so the audience can connect deeper. The use of his poetry helped convey the overall message of not giving up on your dreams.

A universal claim that is true for both texts is that despite one’s socioeconomic or solely economic identity, one can’t judge them for solely those attributes, because they can put forth such amazing things in this world despite the conflict that they may face. The people that have the most talent shy away from the real world because they may not realize the true gifts that we have, and we must encourage open-mindedness and acceptance in our society.

- Nick Erb

Kate Ryan - Does the text target anyone in particular as the “villain” or catalyst of the social issue? How can you tell?

I think that the catalyst of the social issue that is emphasized in this text is ignorance and the lack of help that is provided by other people. There is not one specific person that is targeted as the villain but it is emphasized that cooperation and helping others is how to solve the problem. While it was clear that Raimundo was struggling, until he met Shalla, people had previously avoided helping him because his conditions did not have a direct impact on themselves.

By publishing this text, Facebook stories was probably trying to target a large audience all over the world. I think that they hoped to inspire people to be hopeful even in hard times by showing how Riamondo struggled but still had hope. They were also trying to bring about a sense of empathy by showing how Riamondo lived his life as a homeless man but still continued to do what he loved, so that people could understand the struggle that a lot of people have while reminding them that everyone has dreams and an important story to be heard. - Eliana Litos
