This contemporary coming-of-age story seems a bit dull at the start but could be interesting as you read on. This novel has been seen as a classic for older generations. "The Bean Trees'' deals with real-world hardships that remain prevalent as highlighted by some of today's YA novels, exclusively "Far From the Tree" by Robin Benway. As I can relate to some issues described in both novels, I don't think that I would choose this book from the shelf right away.

I kept reading and had a moment that I have with all forms of consumable art like a movie, show, or video game when I realize I do not enjoy it. I was at a certain point and had no motivation to keep going. I thought "Why should I care?" I just was reading about things that have happened to this girl, but I had no true interest. It felt like listening to someone go on about a topic you are not interested in. Obviously if they are a nice person you don't want to be rude and cut them off, but at the same time you are bored of listening. That is how I felt when trying to read this. I had no moment where I was pulled in enough to keep reading.
