In the chapter III we see how Winston feels responsible for the disappearance of his mother. This could foreshadow the future. Additionally, he might be able to meet the girl with the black hair he dreamt of in The Golden Country Side and potentially marry her.
An important motif that emerges thought out the three chapters is urban decay. Under the guidance of the new party, London has completely fallen apart. Most buildings are in shambles; for example, in Winston's run down apartment building the elevator will not work. With the addition of the advanced tele-screens, it shows the party's prioritization of strict control and utter neglect of citizens’ quality of living.
Chapter three illustrates the party's oppression of citizens forced repression of sexual feelings as he fantasizes about having sex with a mysterious dark haired woman. The woman, just as sex, is treated a an unfathomable mystery that Winston desires yet distrusts .
Finally, chapter three depicts the party's control over the past and the psychological control it exerts over citizens . The inability to keep records documents and pictures prevents people from rising up a against the government. Winston's memories of the past only cone to him vaguely in dreams because they must be suppressed during his waking hours.
👁‍🗨👁‍🗨👁‍🗨👁‍🗨👁‍🗨

Throughout chapter IV of 1984, we are given a very detailed account into the workplace of Winston Smith. We are given details about the appearance of his workplace, such as the three orifices each having a different purpose. We are also given details of the kind of work Winston is in charge of. We are shown that Winston deals with rather cryptic messages sent to them mostly in Newspeak words. The chapter also shows how continuous alteration is done to all kinds of media, not just newspapers, and how the past is written by the Party exactly the way they want it. It is mentioned that work is the greatest pleasure in Winston's life. This is because it can be so intricate and complex at times that he gets lost in it often.
Besides the work of Winston, we are also given some information of what happens to political opposers, such as the FFCC, are completely wiped out from history and society, becoming "unpersons"
❌📰📖🗞📄❌

The chapter begins with Winston having a dream relating to his deceased mother. In the dream his mother is on a ship that is doomed to sink. After this dream, Winston feels as if he is responsible for the disappearance of his mother during the purge, very long ago. He has another dream about a place called The Golden Country. At this place he sees the girl with dark hair, take off her clothes and run towards him in an act of freedom that annihilates the whole Party. He wakes up to a high pitch sound coming from the tele-screen, signal indicating it is time for exercise.
As Winston begins to exercise he tries to remember about his childhood, however he recalls very little about this time. Winston does not have any photos videos, or any physical records about his childhood which makes it hard for him to remember anything about this time in his life.
Winston also starts to wonder about Oceania's relationship with other countries. According to official history, Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia and in alliance with Eastasia, but Winston knows that the records have been changed. He also remembers that no one has heard of Big Brother until 1960, but he knows that Big Brothers name appears in documents dating back to the 1930s. While heaving these thoughts a voice from the telescreen calls out his name because he was not working hard enough. At the end of the chapter Winston starts to break a sweat and tries very hard to touch his toes.
👁👁👁👁👁👁👁

During chapter IV, we are given more examples of how the Party gains complete control over society. They edit history and the news to their own benefit and to advance their agenda.
Additionally, chapter four illustrates how double think allows the Party to control the past. Double think allows the workers at The
Ministry of Truth to believe in the false versions of records they alter. Another way the Party achieves power is by eliminating any and all political opponents from any memory and history, even going as far as to not give them a trial or publicly denounce them. An example is the FFCC, in which Comrade Withers and his associates, were completely dissolved without any reasons given.
😮😱😨😯🤐😲
