I'm surprised that Jaime Escalante is not mentioned in this chapter. He took remedial math students and taught them Calculus, by believing in them and getting them to believe in themselves, "Growth Mindset". Many students that "struggle" at the high school level, have gaps in their learning. We need to work to identify those gaps and fill them, at the same time fostering a positive outlook on math and themselves as learners. All students should be challenged every day to become independent learners.
