This is a song that doesn't fall into the category of referencing relationships and instead purely focuses on the strength and independence of women. Recently, Kesha has had a new wave of music in which she "sends out a powerful message to women everywhere, as her music begins to tackle raw, real topics very personal to her and on healing from sexual abuse" (Hanson). I feel that this song is a perfect strong female anthem with it's vulgar language and unapologetic tone. This is one of those songs that makes you feel powerful and proud to be a woman without needing to focus on men. Kesha is "claiming her identity as a woman and spreading a message of positivity and forgiveness, even in the face of unimaginable horror" (Hanson).

Recently, Dua Lipa seems to have become a major player in the female empowerment game of songs and "is already being seen as an authentic voice of young British womanhood: independent, cool and in command of her own sexuality" (Snapes). I feel that this song is a great example of that. This song is one of those breakup type of songs that I previously mentioned, however I feel that this song succeeds in focusing on empowering the girl to get over the guy rather than the obsessing over the guy and the lost relationship. This song fights against that emotional female stereotype and instead gives you a song that speaks to independence and one that speaks "about feminism and the importance of elevating" young girls in the world (Snapes).

This song takes the standard representations of masculinity and femininity that we see in the music world and flips them on their head. The girl takes up the role as the masculine partner while the boy plays the feminine role. With the reverse, I really enjoy just how much you start to notice the little things that highlight our gender roles. Just the movements in the dancing are so noticeably different. There is much division between the two defined genders of female and male. You can definitely see this divide between the two in the music industry when working behind the scenes, partially in the way that men and women are treated as musicians. However, despite this divide in gender, both women and men often sing about similar things, just in different ways. Both female and male artist often references relationships. Men have more romantic and sex relationship songs while women have more romantic and breakup relationship songs. The non-love type of songs by men seem to more often be about the sexual side of women and relationships while the non-love type of songs by women seem to be about breakups and getting over men. I think that this speaks to the way that men and women are treated and seen in the media and in life in general. Women being more emotional and men being more sexual. Women have a much higher tendency to be sexualized, both in their own songs and in the songs of others, especially has a sort of trophy or bragging tool. With this, a mass wave of female empowerment anthems has been and still is sweeping through the music industry. These songs make you proud to be a woman, similar to how many women feel when they look at the image of Rosie the Riveter. She is the age old inspiration of female empowerment, showing how women have the ability to do anything they put their minds to.

In this video, I feel that Charli did a great job of flipping the stereotypical male gaze that we often see in music. Her video features an array of "boys" in variety of very sexual and alluring ways. It's a type of feminism where instead of trying to change it, she flips it and uses it to her advantage on the opposite gender. Since women are sexualized so much in the music industry, why not make a song that sexualizing men just as much.
