Her professional stage debut was in 1990 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival (a notable summer theatre in Massachusetts) after watching her mother perform there for several years. In 1991, she was cast by her godfather Steven Spielberg in the hit adventure feature Hook based on the iconic story of Peter Pan.

Much of her early work can be attributed to her family’s industry connections, but they were instrumental to the development of her acting skills seen in her later, larger roles.

After her Oscar-winning appearance in Shakespeare in Love (1998), as well as her other successful films of the same year, Paltrow’s career experienced a period of stagnation. Gwyneth stated that she was ill-equipped for the pressure of becoming an Oscar winner, which pushed her to accept offers for several poorly-performing films that received mixed reviews. Despite her waning popularity with audiences at this time, her admittance to struggling with managing her career decisions grounded her star image and made her seem more down-to-earth. She seemed to agree with her industry peers that winning an Academy Award can be a curse rather than a blessing.

Paltrow spoke out in The Guardian about dividing her attention between relatively low-paid passion projects and high-earning mainstream films. To the public, this arguably positions her as relatable- to maintain her (admittedly very lavish) lifestyle, she has to take on work that ‘pays the bills’ as the films she enjoys making are not lucrative enough. Additionally, she indicates that the celebrity way of living cannot always be desirable.

After her mixed successes following her Oscar win, Paltrow decided to take a hiatus from acting in favour of focusing on raising her children. Here she arguably takes a postfeminist stance on the dilemma of maintaining a career while having a family. We see Gwyneth stepping back from the limelight and choosing to prioritise a more domestic lifestyle. While she did take on some small roles in this period, none of them performed especially well. She effectively decided that being close to her children was more important to her than her work.

In 2008, Gwyneth launched a weekly wellness and lifestyle newsletter called Goop. This was her first major foray outside the world of acting, framing her as able to succeed outside of her family’s industry and become an independently successful businesswoman. The Goop newsletter explored holistic wellness practices and also included an editor’s note offering an insight into Gwyneth’s life at home in London. Again, her decision to anchor herself in the domestic sphere was a clear indication that her star image was developing to encompass ideas of her as a family-oriented woman.

2008 saw Gwyneth take on her first role in a big-budget project for many years - appearing as Pepper Potts in the Marvel blockbuster Iron Man. As a part of the lucrative Avengers franchise, she was hesitant to take on the part, but in this interview she describes her research through decades of Marvel comics into the character she would portray, the 1940s ‘screwball’ comedy she embodied, and the time period she was modelled from. Clearly she is aiming to convey that in this new phase of her career, she is choosing to focus on roles that she feels connected to and which show her respect for the craft.

Gwyneth also describes how she hopes her multi-dimensional character will have a meaningful impact on female viewers, especially in comparison to the ‘flat’ women seen in other onscreen relationships. However, when asked about being organised in her personal life, she says: “I think that’s just women though, isn’t it? We’re like the brains of the house, the multitaskers.” Here we can see conflict between her feminist and postfeminist ideals: that women are multifaceted individuals with more to offer than their relationships with men, but that they are also expected to manage the domestic lives of their families.

This initial Marvel role would lead to six other appearances as Pepper Potts, including in Avengers: Endgame (2019)- Paltrow’s highest-grossing film to date.

She performed multiple songs with the show’s ensemble cast, as well as delivering what Entertainment Weekly described here as one of her “best performances ever.” Her vocal debut earned her a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Murphy’s suggestion was made to help Paltrow showcase her singing abilities before the release of the film Country Strong (2010), in which she played a struggling country singer, further developing her star image to reflect her broad range of talents.

Gwyneth performed ‘Forget You’, one of the songs from the show, with original artist CeeLo Green as well as a selection of Jim Henson Company puppets at the 2011 Grammy Awards. This appearance was somewhat unexpected for her, but showing that she could poke fun at herself on a global stage like this had a significant impact on her public perception. No longer just a child of celebrity parents, Paltrow was now undeniably a star in her own right.

The expansion of Goop

From its beginnings as a weekly online newsletter, Goop has expanded into a successful e-commerce business with the same core goal to “nourish the inner aspect.” The company was first incorporated in 2011, launching its online shop in 2012, and inspired a wave of other celebrities to establish their own wellness websites. The content of the Goop website became increasingly controversial as its reach grew, leading to criticisms from doctors and other health experts who began to describe it as pseudoscientific. However, many fans of the business were unperturbed by this - Gwyneth had around 90 employees working for her when she took over as CEO in 2017 after relocating operations to the UK following her divorce.

Goop’s radical ideas have been the subject of several lawsuits, including one from the nonprofit advertising watchdog Truth in Advertising. Rather than viewing this as a setback, Gwyneth instead drew on the common idea in the media industry that ‘all publicity is good publicity’ and set about turning the increased attention on her brand into sales. This attitude indicates how her experience in her original field helped prepare her for the world of business. However, in response to the criticism Goop created an internal regulatory team which focused on the veracity of the science behind their products and suggestions.

Goop ran several pop-up shops before establishing permanent storefronts in California and New York in 2018. Arguably the most well-known Goop product is “This Smells Like My Vagina,” a candle which originally retailed for $75 but after a quick sell-out could be found on the resale market for far more. The brand now sells an extensive high-end makeup and skincare collection, a fashion line called ‘G. Label’, and a selection of wellness products including women’s sex toys and nutritional supplements. Aside from their own ranges, the Goop website is a platform for a curated selection of brands to sell their own beauty and wellness products to Gwyneth’s audience of women with disposable income who want to invest in their health. The company is now valued at around $250 million, evidencing Paltrow’s success in the eyes of the public at creating a profitable business despite controversy.

She also performed in an independent film called Thanks for Sharing (2012), appearing opposite industry legends Mark Ruffalo and Tim Robbins. A review of the films in Paste magazine likened the obsessive dieting and exercise traits of Gwyneth’s character to her real-life persona - implying that Goop’s brand of unconventional health and wellness advice had become a significant part of her star image.

Following an appearance alongside Johnny Depp in Mortdecai (2015), which flopped at the box office, Paltrow announced that she would be taking another break from acting - this time to focus full-time on Goop. This decision indicates that by her announcement of this in 2017, her career as a businesswoman had reached equal or greater importance to her than her work as an actress.

Gwyneth’s personal interests in fitness, cooking, meditation and travel are well-documented on her page. While some posts are clearly sponsored, others have a much less corporate feel and appear to offer a rare insight into Gwyneth’s private life. Van den Bulck and Larsson (2017) suggest that using the media for controlled exposure of parts of a celebrity’s life can aid in the formation of parasocial relationships between the celebrity and their fans, making them more likely to consume the work the star produces.

Gwyneth’s sophisticated and sensual star image landed her a role as the face of Estee Lauder’s Pleasures perfume. For a luxury brand to employ her likeness in order to sell their product, it is evident that Gwyneth also emanates the same ideas of luxury and class. She also served as the face of fashion house Coach, which chose her for her high-income appeal and her many female fans with disposable income to spend on designer goods. Brand partnerships are often also lucrative for celebrities, with high payouts and significant opportunities for exposure to further their careers.
