The first people to come to Rwanda were the Twa. They came in 10,000BC. The Hutus came later and forced most of the Twa were forced off. The hutus had a clan-based society. They had clan leaders they called Abahinza. Though the Hutus and the Tutsis shared the same language, culture and wore the same clothing the Tutsi were seen as upper class. In the 16th century the Tutsis had a king, the king had a group of people called abiiru they could veto the kings orders if it violated Rwanda laws.

Germany colonized Rwanda in 1899 Belgium then took it over in 1916. Belgium ruled over rwanda in a way that increased socioeconomic divisions. Belgium then was given permission to govern Rwanda by the League of Nations in 1923 but rwandans had little say in the matter. Belgium influenced the country through the tutsi king. They also gave rwandans identification cards that said if they are a tutsi or hutu.

Belgium liked the tutsi more than the hutus but in the 1950s the hutus played more of a role in the government.

In 1961 the Hutus wanted independence from Belgium, they declared Rwanda a Republic. And in 1962 Rwanda was officially independent from Belgium. The first president was a Hutu named Gregoire Kayibanda. A lot of Tutsis left Rwanda after the president was elected. Most of the Tutsi exiles attacked the Hutu government. The president was then removed from power in 1973 when another Hutu group came and took over the government. Then an army general named Juvénal Habyarimana became the next president. He was in power for 21 years

Rwanda's president Pasteur Bizimungu resigned in 2000 when he was stealing money from the government. Paul Kagame then became the president and has been since. In 2003, Rwanda passed a law that made it so multiple political parties can run for office. However, some supporters of the ruling party have used violence to scare smaller parties from running. Though President Kagame has been criticized for his treatment of the internet and some politicians from other parties, many Rwandans see him as the reason Rwanda has been peaceful for so many years after the genocide. The economy is recovering after the conflict, but many Rwandans still live in poverty.
