Zeus is the son of the Titan of time, Cronus and the Titaness of fertility, Rhea. Cronus, fearing his children would overthrow him and take control of the world, swallowed his children. However, Rhea managed to save Zeus by “...wrapping a stone in swaddling clothes and giving this to Cronus to swallow.” (Cartwright) Zeus was sent to Crete, where he was raised the goddess of the Earth, Gaia, to adulthood. After forcing his father Cronus to cough up his siblings, the gods fought a war with the Titans known as the Titanomachy. After ten years of war, the gods and their allies the Cyclopses and the Hecatonchires were victorious. He imprisoned the Titans to Tartarus, “...the deepest part of the Underworld. Making himself ruler of the skies, Zeus then gave dominion over the seas to Poseidon and of the Underworld to Hades.” (Cartwright)

In addition to being the god of thunder and the skies, Zeus also represents power. As the king of the gods, he dominates Mount Olympus. Even though he is not the god of justice, he is also known to be a great punisher. For example, he imprisoned the Titans to Tartarus for eternity and according to legends, they were “...made build the magnificent walls of Troy…” (Cartwright) There are countless other examples of Zeus delivering justice, including condemning Atlas to support the Earth, and sending Pandora to Earth with a box of misery.

Role in Odysseus

Zeus had some major parts in the Odyssey. Near the beginning of the epic, Zeus assured his daughter, Athena, that he will help Odysseus off the island of Ogygia. He sends Hermes, the messenger god, to tell Calypso to release Odysseus from her island. He keeps Poseidon, the god of the sea, off Odysseus's back. Poseidon was angry at Zeus for a prior incident in which Polyphemus, Poseidon’s son, got blinded by Odysseus. Lastly, in the end of the Odyssey, Zeus “allows Athena to go to Ithaca to alert Telemachus that his father is coming home.” (Study.com) This is because Telemachus is in danger, as the suitors want revenge when Odysseus killed one of their leaders named Antinous.
