         <description><![CDATA[<p>Many characteristics of whales suggest they could have descended from ancestors that lived on land. Breathing air and nursing their offspring with the milk they produce are two common examples. During embryonic development, whales temporarily have back limbs that disappear before birth. This is another example that substantiates the idea of evolution for me. It is believed that upon spending more time in the water, their front legs eventually turned to flippers. These flippers contain bones that resemble a human hand, which further supports this theory. Following the development of flippers, they developed tails that are larger and more muscular. This is believed to be the reason their back legs ceased to exist.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Lactobacillus acidophilus is a bacterium that aids in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. It can be found in many places throughout the human body. The mouth, intestines, and vagina are some of the most common areas. Many people use Lactobacillus acidophilus as a probiotic. This probiotic resembles the naturally occurring bacteria in the human gut, and helps to prevent the harmful bacteria from causing ailments by maintaining balance. It does this by sustaining an acidic environment. While it is still being studied, it is believed that acidophilus can help reduce symptoms of diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and irritable bowel syndrome. In addition to being taken as a supplement, it can also be found in certain foods like yogurt and kefir.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Monocots and dicots are the two divisions of flowering plants. These names come from the number of seed leaves the embryonic seedling possesses. As indicated by the name, the monocot has one cotyledon, where the dicot has two. There are other distinguishing features such as leaves, root systems, and number of flower petals. One of the most common plants we see on a daily basis is grass. Grass is a monocot; it has fibrous roots and parallel leaf veins. A distinguishing feature of dicots is branched leaf veins.  We often see this on maple trees or even common garden plants like roses. For my family, it is common to see more vegetable plants, because we grow our own garden. We see a lot of tomatoes, which are dicots, and a lot of corn and onions, which are monocots. The leaves of corn and roots of onions are great depictions of these.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Sea stars, brittle stars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers are all invertebrates. They are classified in the phylum Echinodermata. They have an internal structure called an endoskeleton. The endoskeleton makes them appear to have spiny skin. Echinoderm actually translates to spiny skin. These creatures live in the ocean and have radial symmetry. For the most part they reproduce sexually; some, however, do reproduce asexually. Locomotion is made possible by their tube feet.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Homeostasis is maintaining a stable internal environment. When something is going wrong, the control center receives feedback from the receptors, which detect the problem. The problem that has been detected is then corrected by the effectors. The human body has two ways to fix these issues. One is by using a negative feedback system, which puts a stop to whatever may be going on and brings it back to its normal state. Some examples are blood sugar and body temperature. The human body also possesses a positive feedback system; this system enhances the stimuli. Two common examples of positive feedback systems are blood clotting and childbirth. Without homeostasis, life would be unsustainable. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Chronic kidney disease currently affects about 10% of the world's population, with a higher prevalence in women than men. This article refers to chronic kidney disease as a "silent killer" because the symptoms don't often present themselves until substantial damage has been done. A means for early diagnosis would be essential to slowing the progression of this disease, which could lead to more favorable outcomes for the patient. This disease is categorized into five stages; the latter resulting in the possibility of transplant or dialysis in order to survive. In attempt to get ahead of this disease, the Kidney Health Score was created. This looks at several factors including blood pressure, BMI, waist circumference, blood glucose, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio. This article goes on to dive deeper into each of these six topics and discusses the importance of them. This tool provides hope in detecting chronic kidney disease sooner and avoiding the damage that can be imposed if undetected.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Temperate grasslands are exactly what the name suggests: large plains covered in grass that lack many trees. Temperatures differ depending on the time of the year. They have a season in which the weather is hot and a season in which the weather is cold. There are several areas of the earth that contain temperate grasslands; some of these include North America, New Zealand, and South Africa. These areas do not receive an immense amount of rain. For that reason, there are not many other types of vegetation aside from grass. There are many animals that call the grasslands their home. Zebras, lions, deer, and skunks are just a few examples.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Biodiversity is defined as all forms of life on earth and their interactions with each other. Biodiversity can be found everywhere. Ecosystems are formed by various organisms within a certain area; they depend on the energy that is transferred from one organism to the next. The amazon rainforest is one of the largest and most diverse ecosystems; it houses millions of species within billions of acres. There are also ecosystems within the soil that we encounter every day. Bacteria allow plants to grow, which feeds the herbivores and omnivores; these are then consumed by the carnivores. Biodiversity is necessary for our survival. It provides us with oxygen and food.</p>]]></description>
