My name is Teagan Quill. I am 22 years old and I grew up in Western Massachusetts. I first was introduced to occupational therapy when I was four years old when my brother received early intervention services within our home. In high school I narrowed down my field of interest to healthcare, wanting a career that involved improving the lives of those around me. After shadowing an early intervention OT and doing a semester-long internship with a certified hand therapist, I found that although OT was still within the healthcare field, it would allow me to actually get to know the people I would be working with, and personalize treatment to fit them in a way that the other healthcare careers couldn't allow for. As I have progressed through OT school and worked first hand with people with disabilities in the adaptive recreation field, I not only am certain OT is for me, but I also would like to specialize in physical disabilities within the OT field. In addition, I am interested in adaptive recreation OT, and would like to work at an adaptive summer camp for a week or two in the summer if possible. Seeing the difference in individuals before and after services help them become more independent, is immensely motivating to me.

Curricular Threads

The curricular thread that has been seen through all of the program classes is professionalism. Within the classroom, we have been required to dress professionally when presenting to the class. Outside of the classroom, specifically at my fieldwork experiences at Sacred Family hospital, Tatnuck nursing home, and Christina's House, working with clients from the clinical role has taught me how to interact with clients within a program and be assertive while maintaining a professional and respectful relationship.
Another two curricular threads are evidence based practice and clinical reasoning. Across all classes, we have been taught to use interventions and assessments that have research to back the validity of their use. In the two research classes we have taken, we learned the how to locate research articles, read the sections, interpret the data, and evaluate the article's usefulness for our clinical use. Using these articles, along with the various models and frames of references that we learned about in our theories class, we began to develop our abilities to clinically reason. Using case studies and application questions, such as the one's we completed on physical disabilities tests, we have increased our critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills to evaluate situations and choose the best course of action.

Personal Philosophy of OT

To me, occupational therapy is the process of helping an individual access the best quality of life possible for them and their particular situation, encouraging them to be as independent as possible with the necessary supports and tools in place. Through individualized goals based on each client's unique needs, OTs work with clients to increase their quality of life and capabilities in a variety of ways. This may include skill acquisition, increased self esteem, adaptive equipment implementation, environmental modifications, and more.

Strengths and Areas to Work on

I believe my strengths include a willingness to learn new things, problem solving, and leadership. Two areas I could work on are working with technology, and collaborating with others that I find difficult to work with. To improve my technological skills, I can spend some free time clicking through the different options on various platforms such as excel, and Microsoft teams. When I am in my OT job, I can get to work a little early to look at the specific software the company uses before I start inputting documentation in myself, asking questions as I go. To work on collaborating with those I find difficult to work with, I will communicate as clearly as possible and discuss designated roles, responsibilities, and timelines for tasks in order to minimize confusion.
