It it essential for teachers to model and encourage non-judgemental approaches to discussing cultural, social, or other types of difference, facilitate discussion among students with a variety of communication styles and create opportunities for interaction among learners that allow them to learn from each other, share different perspectives, and share their experiences. It is also important to cultivate empathy, tolerance and interaction. Students should develop cultural awareness, the ability to understand different cultural contexts and viewpoints, demonstrate and respect for others.

I agree with Alicia and Erica that eTwinning helps to develop cross-cultural competencies by building a cultural bridge between students of different nationalities living in different countries. It offers a chance for realistic intercultural learning situations. Pupils will learn about friendships and different views, habits and cultural characteristics within a different culture. Thus, students may make friends, become tolerant and accept differences, they learn to adapt more easily, they learn “new ways” for solving a problem, and they share their culture.

2.4.
People identify themselves in many ways

because they belong to many different cultural groups. Cultural identity is important for ones’ sense of self and in relating to other people. A strong cultural identity can

contribute to a person’s overall wellbeing. Identifying with a particular culture gives us a feeling of belonging and security. It also provides us with access to social networks, which provide support, shared values and aspiration

Empathy is a unique characteristic that encompasses the emotional and intuitive aspects of an individual. Empathy is understood as the capability to recognize or understand another's state of mind or emotion. Open-mindedness is understood to be the process of showing receptiveness to new or different ideas. Based on these definitions of empathy and open-mindedness, it is clear that the two are drastically similar. Both involve understanding another person's ideas or state of mind, and perhaps as a consequence, gaining some form of acceptance from this understanding. It is important to develop both of them in our classrooms.
