How Slope-Intercept Form Works & How it is Applied to the Real World by Claire Siebens

The equation of a straight line is given in the form y=mx+b, also known as slope-intercept form. The objective is to help you understand the components of the slope-intercept equation, and learn how it will be used outside of the classroom.

Welcome Students! As stated above, the purpose of this message board is to learn the different parts of the slope-intercept equation and to be able to apply it to the real world. Here is everything you need to know about slope-intercept form to complete this assignment:
Slope-intercept form is the equation of a line, y=mx+b.
The "m" stand for slope. You can find slope by selecting two known points from the line and applying them to the formula (y2-y1)/(x2-x1).
When you calculate the slope, you can then find the y-intercept. The y-intercept is "b" in the equation and it is the point where the line crosses the vertical y-axis. You simply plug in one of the points as the "y" and "x" in the equation and plug in the slope as "m". Then, you solve for "b" and that gives you the y-intercept.
Finally, you plug back in the "b" and "m" in the form y=mx+b and you get the equation of that straight line!

There will be three posts that include two known points of a line, and you are required to pick any two points and solve for "m" and "b". After solving, you must apply those back to the original form y+mx+b to find the equation of the line you picked. Please explain how you got your answers as best as you can, so I may assist you in case of an error.
I would also like everyone to reply a comment to a question I will have posted at the bottom of the page.

In case you are having trouble finding the slope-intercept equation of your line, here is an example:
Two known points of a line are (3,2) and (6,8). Calculate the slope and y-intercept, and use that information to create the equation of the line.
First, find the slope. Plug in the two points to the equation (y2-y1)/(x2-x1). It will look like this: (8-2)/(6-3) = (6)/(3) = 2. The slope of the line is 2.
Now, calculate the y-intercept. Plug in the slope, 2, and use one of the points as the "x" and "y". If I use the point (3,2), my work will look like this: y=mx+b 2=2(3)+b 2=6+b Subtract 6 from both sides. -4=b. The y-intercept is -4.
The slope-intercept equation for the line will then be: y=2x-4.
