Normal hearing is characterized by thresholds of 20 dB (decibels) or better in both ears, meaning the level at which the person can hear comfortably is around 20 decibels. Hearing loss can be characterized as mild, moderate, severe, and/or profound. Hearing loss can be in one ear or both. There are three types of hearing loss, conductive (which involves the outer or middle ear) sensorineural (inner ear) or mixed, which is both conductive and sensorineural. People with hearing disabilities are candidates for hearing aids and cochlear implants. They can also utilize sign language and other assistive devices.

Identification Procedures and Service Delivery

Hearing loss can be identified by hearing screenings and testing for ear abnormalities. Testing can be done through testing one frequency at a time or testing speech levels.

Accommodations

Hearing aids, cochlear implants, hearing assistive technology (such as FM systems, microphones, and adaptive listening environments). People with hearing loss can also apply for disability within work and school. Many of these resources are provided through IDEA of the individuals with disabilities education improvement act 2004.

Behavior Management

Research has shown that children with hearing impairments are more likely to exhibit behavioral issues. Early intervention is the best way to make a difference in behavior and development in children with hearing impairment(s). Behavioral and family therapy are also options to assist in the struggles that come with having a child with hearing impairment.
