I am in the field of childhood elementary because I love kids and want to be a positive influence in their lives. It's the next generation of adults in our hands. Every child is unique and deserves an individualized education. It is both amazing and terrifying how malleable children are. The impact you make on a student can dictate the rest of their life.

Diversity is important in the classroom because we are educating our next generation. By having diverse students, children are exposed to other cultures. The best way to teach children tolerance is to set good examples. Treating every single student the same will show children that every person regardless of race, sexuality, religion, gender etc of the same value. I would also want to encourage and support my students culture. I want to celebrate all holidays in the classroom, Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, etc. When topics of slavery, Holocaust, exploration of America, come up, we should give the honest account of what happened. Not the sugar coated version I grew up learning. Ignorance created all the discrimination in our country. The more exposure of cultures will create more compassionate, well-rounded children and later adults. You can already see this in my generation, Gen Z, are a more tolerant, empathetic generation than ever before. Educating our children is how we turn around the discrimination in our country.

Something I find interesting about teaching young children is how moldable their minds are. Children come into this world knowing nothing at all. We must teach them everything. This takes an insane amount of patience and gentleness. This is my third child development class and I have learned so much to help me at my job. Instead of getting frustrated when the 2-year-old cries, I do breathing exercises to help her regulate her emotions. I sit and wait for her to calm down and have a conversation with her about what is going on. Just understanding her stages of development eases my frustration with her. This seemingly little action can carry into the rest of her life. Using compassion in this situation will create a healthy relationship with her mental health later in life, preventing anxiety disorders or other mental illnesses.
