The truly sublime are remembered for who they are. What they accomplish becomes secondary.Being famous, rich, or even a leader doesn’t aspire someone to greatness.Throughout history, there are many more rich and famous who’ve been forgotten than poor ones who are remembered. The sands of time is history which can be both remembered or forgotten.When someone leaves behind footprints in the sands of time, they are leaving behind imprints of themselves or their actions in history.

Greatness isn't something that thrust upon us.There are some who are remembered by what they did.That doesn't mean that they have become great. It simply means their actions,good or bad are remembered.They become memories, footprints which doesndisappear or take centuries to disappear.Their name is associated with their actions.
The truly sublime are who remembered for who they 
are.What they accomplish becomes secondary.
When you put humanity before yourself, the path to greatness will itself open for you.When you take that path, you too will leave behind the footprints in the sand of time.

the above verse is from H.W Longfellow's poem "the Psalm of life".  By this he means that the lives of so many great and successful men remind us that we can also achieve those heights if we wish and strive for that. And if you can accomplish this, then you can live forever in the hearts of people. longfellow  compares this immortality to leaving footprints on the sands of time, that is, by ways of explanation, that we will not be living forever here, but we can leave our marks on the infinite flow of time through our good work. inspiring the coming generations like ours to follow our way.

This is a line mentioned by Longfellow in his poem, 'A Psalm of Life'. These lines are a poetic reference to the prominent people who has contributed to make an imprint in history. The poet is trying to convey that we should not be the one who leaves no trails or traces after our demise. We should attempt our best shot at being one who can create history and be 'sublime'. The lives of prominent individuals are those which set examples for the future generation to put their step forth in order to make their contribution towards history.
