They developed a complex government over the years where the Sultan was the leader. Wealth and rank in the Ottoman Empire was commonly inherited from past generations, but it was also possible to earn both. There were very clear boundaries between classes however, with specified clothes assigned to each. In the 16th and 17th hundreds the Ottoman Empire was one of the world's most powerful political forces. The Mughal's governed one of the most populated empires in the world. They had a centralized government that was able to bring together many small kingdoms. 150 years after the Empire was started internal issues began, power started going to the nobles' heads. The number of elite's were growing and the Empire began to fear them. Religious tolerance also began to crumble during this time, which led to a weakened Empire, which eventually fell. The Tokugawa Shogunate restored order and unity to Japan. They upheld stern social hierarchies, with 4 social groups: warrior, farmer, artisan, and merchant.
