They had to gather enough support (military) for their cause. As a result many weapons were needed. If a similar situation arose, their people would be armed and able to defend themselves. 

2) Emotion: They would've felt the emotion from war. Consequently, they would've wanted nothing similar to happen to any of their countrymen. 

3) Faith: When under Britons rule, they had to pay Britain tax, and some of that money would have gone to the Church of England

4) Language(Culture): Having established a culture (different way of life), they would have wanted to defend it. 

5) Intuition/Imagination/Senses: They may have perceived that there was going to be another war and wanted to be prepared after recently gaining independence.
