To Decolonize Indigenous Lands, We Must AlsoAbolish Police and Prisons by

Read this passage: “Neither abolition nor decolonization are metaphors. Both movements want what they say — an end to policing and prisons, and an end to land theft and return of the land to Native peoples — and argue that it is fully possible to have an end to the prisons and policing, and to end colonization and therefore, for Native peoples to have their lands back” What was your initial reaction to these statement? What’s your thoughts on the movement to gain back indigenous lands and do you agree or disagree?

I believe it is possible for native Americans to regain their land as well as removing the government and replacing it with natives as they are the ones that should really have a decision on things that effect all Americans. They have more knowledge on taking care of land and caring for the people much more than polices do.

My initial reaction to this statement is there is a lot of confidence and enthusiasm behind it. The movement to give land back to the native people is one that is deserving, natives were forced out of their land and were treated harshly through every aspect of this process. While it may be a struggle there could be many ways to slowly accomplish this.

While I think it is important to help indigenous peoples obtain their land back and to make up for everything the colonizers did, I don’t think it would be a good idea to abolish police and prisons. I think crime would be too rampant if that happened.

How would we do such a thing when we have a government that has not been receptive to the idea and stole the land in the first place?

In a perfect world that would be beautiful. But over the time alot of these lands have been sold off. So then you bring the current ethical debate of should a family have to move out of the homes they put all of their money into. If it was government owned land most definitely, if a corporation owns it move them quickly. The prison issue is one that our nation will not move on. We have the most incarcerated people in the world here. There are corporations that make alot of money from under paid labor. To many pockets are getting larger in this way of rehabilitation.

Although it would be incredibly difficult to both end policing and prisons while also getting native lands back, it could be possible. With that I understand why this movement has taken place, and I think it would be an extreme step foward for the indigenous peoples who's land have been stripped away.

I can see why the passage insists police and prison on native land are also colonization, because it’s a form of government control yet to be relinquished to the indigenous people, though I wonder if they mean to establish a different justice system or simply have indigenous people in place of such duties. I do agree, there’s no reason native lands need to be governed by the U.S. still.

I don’t believe the statement is saying in order to decolonize indigenous lands we must abolish prisons and police. But, I do agree that both movements are incredibly straightforward and powerful and it’s saying that both of these things are attainable. These people aren’t fighting for something impossible. I agree, I believe decolonization should absolutely happen for the sake of the natives so they can gain back what was rightfully theirs in the first place.

A lot of the land is destroyed or mass produced stores/homes with prices sky rocketing. I wonder how differently would the world look if they did receive their lands back.
